5.0 out of 5 stars 80s Kool Kat gets the 'Super Deluxe' treatment, 13 July 2013

This review is from: Remixes And Rarities (Audio CD)
Three record labels have in the past been responsible for reissuing Paul Young's back catalogue, and in truth I've been left rather frustrated by their efforts. (Sony managed to omit the extended version of 'Sex' on their 25th anniversary 2CD deluxe edition of 'No Parlez', although it had actually appeared on the original non-deluxe CD release! Also, a few of the album tracks were edits of the original LP version, which was somewhat annoying for the majority of fans who'd bought and knew the album so well from its representation on vinyl. Young's follow-up, 'The Secret Of Association', was licensed out to Edsel Records and they didn't do much better. They forgot to include the 12-inch extended mixes of 'Hot Fun' and 'I Was In Chains', which had appeared on the cassette version of the album in 1985, on their 2CD reissue of 2007. They also committed a cardinal sin by listing 'Every Time You Go Away' on the second disc as the "12-inch Mix" when it was actually the seven-inch radio version!)

Three cheers then for Cherry Red who for this 2CD 'Remixes and Rarities' collection have enlisted the help of Super Deluxe Edition blogger Paul Sinclair. He has ensured that no such mistakes are made with this release. Not only is the content first rate but the music is magnificently remastered too. I suppose, if you were picky, you could argue that it might have been better to have split the two versions of 'I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down' over the two discs, rather than put them both on Disc One. Also, I would have preferred the 12-inch version of 'Some People' over the Dub version which appears here, but the Dub's rarer and hasn't appeared on CD before. All in all, a real treat with all the big hits included here in their proper remix form as we remember them. Justice is finally served. A must for all Paul Young fans.

...there's a man who has a point of view." I loved that song (Dark Glasses, b-side to I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me). It appears on the second disc of this worthy re-release of Kershaw's debut album. I must say the remastering is superb and much better than recent efforts by Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. They've used the original mix tapes for this release as according to Kershaw when the album was mastered originally on CD, it was from the vinyl master. It's what happened in those days, since CDs were in their infancy and no one realised how big they were going to get. So this is the first time you can actually hear it remastered from the original mix tapes, as they came out of the studio.

Some reviewers have mentioned their disappointment that more 12 inch versions aren't included, but personally I like the fact that the first disc is just the original album, remastered, with no extra remixes thrown on to the end. Saying that, I wouldn't have minded if they'd added the three B sides to the end of the original album, rather than spread them out across the second disc (they should have grouped them together at the start of that second disc.)

I gave this expanded edition 5 stars for the remastering alone. I bought all the original 12 inch records on vinyl and actually played them recently. Kershaw's extended versions were not in the same league as Frankie Goes To Hollywood's for invention, but neither were many other artists. They do sound better remastered, especially the additional brass mix of Shame on You which actually featured on the 12 inch of 'Wide Boy'. There's a newly uncovered extended mix of Bogart, which is OK. I noticed that the Simon Boswell remixes of Wouldn't It Be Good and Human Racing aren't on here which might upset a few people as they were quite experimental with a few samples thrown in (one from TV programme 'The Prisoner' if I recall). A live version of Cloak and Dagger is tagged on at the end and it sounds great, although it's a bit odd as I think it belongs somewhere else, a live album perhaps! Overall, very pleased with my purchase and can't wait for Nik's second (and better album in my opinion) The Riddle to get the same treatment. Finally. if you have the original CD of Human Racing then I recommend you flog it on eBay like I did. It was actually a difficult album to get on CD and I sold mine last week for a tenner - more than this superior version cost on Amazon! Hurry fast though before people realise this 2 disc version has been released!

And Still Ricky Villa: My Autobiography

5.0 out of 5 stars From Gaucho Cowboy to Wembley Hero, 9 Nov 2010
Ricky Villa rarely gave interviews during his five season spell at Spurs, probably due to the fact that whenever the press men came knocking he took the opportunity to hide behind his team-mate and interpreter Ossie Ardiles.

In this superb book, Villa tells what it was like to be one of English football's first foreign imports, in the days when it could be a lonely existence thousands of miles away from home without the Internet, satellite TV, mobile phones or a Sat Nav to help you settle in a foreign country. Villa recalls how he and Ardiles would spend hours driving around London lost with Villa hopelessly trying to map read! In the end, the Argentinians took to either the bus or the Tube to get around as it was easier.

The son of a gaucho cowboy, Villa began his journey to a Wembley wonder goal on a rural farm in Argentina's Pampas, where he would milk the cows every morning before riding his horse to school. He played for his local football team to pass the time and went on to become his country's first million-dollar footballer and a World Cup winner on home soil. The move to Spurs followed soon afterwards, but his time in North London England wasn't all mazy dribbles and Wembley winners. He struggled to fit into the side and was by his own admission a lazy so so in training and on the pitch. He was however capable of producing some South American magic when the stars were aligned to his liking - cue John Motson...

"And Still Ricky Villa" is an honest, distinctly personal account of one brilliant footballer's struggle to get the most out of his talent. He was one of my heroes as a 11-year-old boy, but I knew more about quantum physics than Tottenham's other Argentinian. It may have taken 30 years to discover the real Ricky Villa, but it's been worth the wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars When men were men and the physio only carried a sponge., 4 Mar 2010

I loved watching this DVD, so much so that I'm going to buy some more featuring other teams. The Spurs one includes footage I've never seen before and I've got most of the Spurs DVDs out there. The game may have been slower and the ball heavier, but there's some great skill on show here. The players were every bit as skilful then as they are now. One tackle on Steve Perryman would have seen every player today rolling around and calling for the stretcher. Stevie P just gets up and walks away in disgust! The Spurs games featured are:

69/70 West Ham 0-1 Spurs
70/71 Spurs 2-1 Everton
71/72 Spurs 6-1 Forest
72/73 Spurs 4-3 Stoke
73/74 Spurs 2-0 Arsenal
74/75 Spurs 3-0 Newcastle
75/76 Spurs 2-1 Wolves
76/77 Spurs 2-1 West Ham
77/78 Spurs 1-0 Fulham (bit disappointed they didn't have the 9-0 v Bristol Rovers instead)
78/79 Leeds 1-2 Spurs
79/80 Spurs 1-0 Forest
80/81 Spurs 2-1 Man City
81/82 Spurs 3-0 Forest
82/83 Spurs 2-0 Liverpool

5.0 out of 5 stars Best-ever Spurs book!, 12 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Released in 1972 and one of the best-selling sports books ever. Says it all. For people interested in this book then I can thoroughly recommend another one - Superfan! The Amazing Life of Morris Keston. (Because I wrote it!)

Morris Keston features in The Glory Game chapter titled 'The Hangers-On'. Hunter Davies was wrong about Morris, as it was the players who would hang around him! He became friends with many of the Spurs and England players of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, including Bobby Moore, Jimmy Greaves and Geoff Hurst to name a few. He also mixed in the company of Frank Sinatra ad Muhammad Ali. He's got some amazing untold stories to tell and you can read them all in SUPERFAN - THE AMAZING LIFE OF MORRIS KESTON.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Almost perfect., 12 Feb 2010
Great Spurs book. Packed full of great photos and good commentary from Adam Powley. I spotted the odd mistake, like referring to Les Medley as an inside-left, when he always played at outside-left and saying the club's 1967 FA Cup post-match reception was at the Hilton, when it was at the Savoy (Morris Keston's was at the Hilton), but apart from that top notch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered gem seeking better promotion, 17 Feb 2005

This review is from: Black Car (Audio CD)
Black Car is basically former Blinder and Headswim frontman Dan Glendinning pulling all the strings, with brother Tom providing drums.
Headswim made the Top 40 with the single 'Tourniquet' and the album 'Despite Yourself', which was well-received by the critics and radio alike but failed to propel the band up the charts or give them the recognition Dan's song-writing talent deserved. As a point of interest 'Black car' was also the title of a Headswim song which featured on the 'Tourniquet' CD single release and seemed to showcase a more Radiohead-style of song that Dan does exceptionally well and seems to have continued down this road with BlackCar.
For me this collection of songs sound more personal than Headswim, which I suppose you'd expect with this basically being a solo project. Acoustically uplifting and hopeful, this album is a real grower. Five stars to the following, - 'Asleep at the wheel' 'Come On Home' 'Shadows' 'You'll Be The End' 'She Makes Me Smile' '100% proof'.
Dan really deserves to gain greater recognition for this project and you can't help but think 'what if' . All he needs is for one song to feature in a TV commercial or a film soundtrack and the queues would be forming to snap up the album and see the live set. It happened to Aqualung and Jet...so why not Blackcar?
