5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise - brilliant!, 22 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We're thinking of getting a puppy in the future so I have been doing lots of reading - this is by far the best book I have read on the practicalities of training a new pup. Everything is kept brief and easy to read, with LOTS of pictures which are very helpful. Sophia Yin uses positive training methods, and her main bit of advice is not to give your puppy its food in a bowl - instead, reward your pup for every desired behaviour throughout the day. Pup sits quietly - reward it with some kibble. Pup plays with chew toy - reward it with some kibble. Thus maximising the puppies potential.

There are sections on how puppies develop, what you need for the puppy, house training, and basic obedience. Everything is laid out so perfectly clear. This is the only book I have read where I came away feeling I actually COULD get a puppy now and know what to do! Just a shame it's only available on Kindle as I do prefer to have an actual book to dip in and out of. Top marks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice little read for linguists and non linguists alike, 25 May 2007
This review is from: Language Myths (Paperback)
This is a really great book which aims to dispel commonly held beliefs about language. It's written in a simple, entertaining style that is easy to read, and the fact that it's made up of chapters written by different authors means that it's good to dip in and out of.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Level Essential, 25 May 2007
This book was recommended by the exam board for my English Language A Level and proved to be a big help. I've even been able to refer to it during the first year of my degree. A helpful, easy to understand book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but hard going, 1 Feb. 2007
This book is extremely informative and you don't need to have a hefty background knowledge of linguistic terminology. However, it can be quite involved in parts and some concepts are difficult to grasp hold of. At some points the author goes into quite unnecessary detail over concepts that could actually be explained rather easily.
