The War that Ended Peace: How Europe abandoned peace for the First World War
The War that Ended Peace: How Europe abandoned peace for the First World War
by Professor Margaret MacMillan
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 17.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Good... but, 7 July 2014
Unlike most books on this period the personal characters of the main participents are detailed and facts about therir personal lives emerge. Despite this there are some glaring errors.

It was the "Camperdown" that rammed the "Victoria" drowning the modernistic admiral Tryon, not the other way round.

"Up funnel, down screw " The story of the naval engineer
"Up funnel, down screw " The story of the naval engineer
by Geoffrey Penn
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Engineers, 28 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the vast leterature about the navy and its operations, very little ever mentioned about the engineers who actually make the ship move.

This is an exellent potted history about the unsung heroes of the navy and their long struggle for recognition and equality all the other departments.

A Touch of Frost: Series 5 [DVD] [1992]
Dvd ~ David Jason

Price: 19.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitivy, 28 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If David Jason became famous as Dell Boy, he has certainly lived that down. I found his role as Jack Frost almost completely believable. More than this he seemed to bring a degree of sensitivity to the role. Almost uncanny the knowledge and working relationships with the various people in his "manor".

2.0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish, 28 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having watched some of the UFO Hunters DVDs, I failed to see any credible evidence of alien encounters. The various shown wall paitings are about my standard and I am a university graduate. None of the aliens seems to have discarded any rubbish, broken equipment, a spanner or even died and were buried on Earth. This latter would have been the most convincing evidence of all.

During a recent archealogical expedition to the South American Andes the team wanted to test out construction theories by partially reconstructing a ruined temple. Advertising for local labour several hundred people turned up to drag and move the stones, including large numbers of women.

The whole event rapidly became festive with the older women forming a crech for the small children. As the teams formed up to drag the stone blocks it was one of the labourers who defined the whole event. "These places were built by our ancestors, not the aliens".

The simple fact is that the human race is alone and there are those whio are desperately searching for (non existant) evidence of somebody else out there.

This is a meticulously researched book giving a great deal of the usual details about the ships covered. Missing completely is any technical details. I had hoped to see pictures of the ships internal details, the engines, mess decks, galleys, boiler rooms etc.

For anybody looking for brief details of any of the ships including commissions and careers this is an excellent source of information. Anybody seeking the more human aspects of life on a Victorian battleship during the long peace of Empire will have to seek elsewhere.

The Six Wives Of Henry VIII [DVD]
The Six Wives Of Henry VIII [DVD]
Dvd ~ David Starkey
Price: 9.44

4.0 out of 5 stars So what went wrong?, 5 Mar 2014
This seems to be a reasonable reconstruction of events but still leaves me rather baffled.

Henry wanted to divorce Katherine because he needed a male heir and Katherine had failed to do this for whatever medical reason so a divorce was necessary. Henry probably previously sounded out the Pope about this possibility and so far so good.

It is at this stage I became baffled. When the divorce/annulment became necessary Henry applied for the routine divorce available to Kings "for reasons of state". He was unlucky in that Rome had been invaded and was being looted by a combined German, spanish and Italian army. The Pope being in prison being ransomed he couldn't grant Henry the divorce.

After the invaders had left the Pope was bankrupt and in desperate need of Henrys divorce money. So what wrong? why wasn't a routine divorce granted?

The Emporer Charles V was indeed a nephew of Katherine but to him the situation must have seemed reasonably clear. An older aunt was being divorced "for reasons of state", a situation that he would have understood and unlikely to have aroused any feeling of family involvement.

It was indeed a long drawn out situation before Henry could marry Anne Bolyn and hope for a male heir but nowhere is there a simple explanation of why the Pope didn't grant a simple routine annulment.

A little disappointing. Seems like a fairly ordinary shirt rather than the heavyweight quality that I was expecting. Why was this described as industrial qualkity in the first place?

This is very much like sombody's filming of their holiday. For the opening minutes of my copy the colouring was bad. The various aguments over who was the Pharaoh of Exodus were only slightly explored anfd the final answer seemed to have been simply lifted offline with nothing new offered.

My advice would be not to waste the purchase price..

These DVDs are indeed well photographed and Aubry Manning does a good job at presenting the mystery most of which don't seem to have been covered elsewhere. Despite the overall excellent presentation I am left with a feeling that there is almost some desperation to fill out something, however accurately, which has very little historical depth.
