Millions Like Us: Women's Lives During the Second World War
Millions Like Us: Women's Lives During the Second World War
by Virginia Nicholson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

3.0 out of 5 stars Unbalanced, 22 May 2015
Its an interesting account of many womens lives and how any researcher can only use written sources or survivors accounts. I was at primary school during the late 1940s and junior school during the early1950s so was acquainted with many of the now, sadly deceased, working women of this period and WW2. I was also a close observer of the problems of when the men finally came home from the far corners of the world to be demobbed.

During the same period there were large numbers of women still alive who'd been bereaved by the sad losses and thus deprived of the normal family life by the losses of WW1.

Both this book and "Singled Out" seemed too middle class, reflecting more the women who did write rather than the much greater numbers of working class women who didn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good... but, 7 July 2014
Unlike most books on this period the personal characters of the main participents are detailed and facts about therir personal lives emerge. Despite this there are some glaring errors.

It was the "Camperdown" that rammed the "Victoria" drowning the modernistic admiral Tryon, not the other way round.

Sacking the Monarch - Why Britain must become a republic

3.0 out of 5 stars missing details, 28 Mar. 2014

Like so many Republicans reasonably good evidence is advanced for theUK abolishing the monarchy and becoming a modern republic.

Missing are the practical details of which oneis, what will be the new national anthem?

"Up funnel, down screw " The story of the naval engineer
"Up funnel, down screw " The story of the naval engineer
by Geoffrey Penn
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Engineers, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the vast leterature about the navy and its operations, very little ever mentioned about the engineers who actually make the ship move.

This is an exellent potted history about the unsung heroes of the navy and their long struggle for recognition and equality all the other departments.

A Touch of Frost: Series 5 [DVD] [1992]
A Touch of Frost: Series 5 [DVD] [1992]
Dvd ~ David Jason
Offered by Lowplex
Price: £11.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitivy, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If David Jason became famous as Dell Boy, he has certainly lived that down. I found his role as Jack Frost almost completely believable. More than this he seemed to bring a degree of sensitivity to the role. Almost uncanny the knowledge and working relationships with the various people in his "manor".

2.0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having watched some of the UFO Hunters DVDs, I failed to see any credible evidence of alien encounters. The various shown wall paitings are about my standard and I am a university graduate. None of the aliens seems to have discarded any rubbish, broken equipment, a spanner or even died and were buried on Earth. This latter would have been the most convincing evidence of all.

During a recent archealogical expedition to the South American Andes the team wanted to test out construction theories by partially reconstructing a ruined temple. Advertising for local labour several hundred people turned up to drag and move the stones, including large numbers of women.

The whole event rapidly became festive with the older women forming a crech for the small children. As the teams formed up to drag the stone blocks it was one of the labourers who defined the whole event. "These places were built by our ancestors, not the aliens".

The simple fact is that the human race is alone and there are those whio are desperately searching for (non existant) evidence of somebody else out there.
