Anglesey at War
Anglesey at War
by Geraint Jones
Edition: Paperback
Price: 12.27

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative history., 24 July 2014
This review is from: Anglesey at War (Paperback)
Bought this book at the Holyhead Maritime Museum, excellent book. Really made me appreciate how poor many people were on the island and how the lack of electricity, mains water and a sewerage system, wasnt rectified until the mid 60s. In addition the young men on the island didn't readily volunteer in the early stages of WW1. The chapel may have had some influence here. WW2 had a greater impact on the island and again the primitive services were put to test. Really made me appreciate how the land of my father was affected. My only criticisms are there is no reference to the fact that in both wars hundreds if not thousands of young men were in the Merchant Navy, including many members of my family. Also, again this is a personal view, the second world war seems to concentrate on the Western area of the war. For example, my fathers cousin, was a Japanese p.o.w. and he survived the Burma railway only to be lost in 1943, when the Japanese transport, he was on was torpedeod by US submarine. Im also aware that men from Ynys Mon fought at the crucial battle of Kohima.

I made the mistake of reading part 2, 1st. Excellent book, so well written. Dichotomy, that PFL, was seen to fail or conform at school, but absorbed and gained so much from classical studies and languages. He is someone, l would have loved, to have met. Benefit is, that l have been to many of his destinations

Assembled this kit, when l was a spotty teenager. Hopefully 50 years on, l will make a better effort, when l get round to the Airfix retro kits of my youth. I knew two people, who served on the Victorious in WW2 and the Pacific campaign was difficult, especially the Kamikazie attacks. Why Airfix did not include Helicopters amongst the aircraft puzzles me. I had forgotten , she had skyraiders, in her compliment.

Anglesey Ghosts

This review is from: Anglesey Ghosts (Paperback)
Have read all of Bunty's books and found them quite fascinating. My paternal family are from Ynys Mon and as a Cymro, l was brought up with a very strong sense of oral tradition. Paternal , Ynys Mon, grandmother recounted many of the stories in the book. There is no reference to the ghost at Llynon Hall, which I cant understand. I feel her interest in the subject is superficial and at times patronising, to the "true people" of the island.

The Steel Bonnets: Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers
The Steel Bonnets: Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers

Excellent work, l had been led to believe that Henry VlII, had unsettled the borders, but its not that simple. Coming from the birth place of the Tudors, l felt a sense of guilt, for the situation. After reading this well researched and readable book, everything became clearer. Found it very ironic that l lived in a South Liverpool suburban road that had Johnstones, Maxwells and Kerrs, formerly, the bitterest of enemies. Now really appreciate how James Stuart, controlled the border.

Ian's work is always excellent. My family were seafarers from Ynys Mon, domicile in Liverpool. Dad was a chief engineer. As a small child, l did think the traditional way of cargo handling was inefficient, little did I know, adults, would think the same and come up with a " creative solution" The last time l sailed on the Mersey ferry, the tears streamed down my cheeks. The docks were not the ones l knew as a child. Thank you lan, for illustrating, those wonderful saturday morning memories, in the 60s, when my dad would take me to his ship
