5.0 out of 5 stars A movie that excels on so many levels, 25 Jun. 2015

What a film, first picture quality and sound brlliant, the fact you get the american and the japanese version even better, the japanese one adds more footage.

What a story, a movie that almost bankrupted the studio because the producer and director would not be told how to make it, they wanted it to be truthful showing all the mistakes that were made, like dominoes they all fell.

The acting is wonderful especially I feel the japanese, considering at the time the war was still in peoples minds and hearts. The japanese director brought the intensity and the stiffness of there government to the screen in a believable show of force. The scenes around hawaii are breathtaking especially when the planes come over, you cna imagine how people must have felt.

The mistakes made by all is amazing and this film puts them there right on the screen from the high admiralty to the officers on the ground, from ignoring conversations between high japanese officials to being more paranoid about local hawaiian residents trying to destroy the planes that the actual japanese military, they moved the planes into groups together instead of spread out across the fields, hence it made a better target for the bombers to hit them. You see how people trying to advise there superiors tried to get there point across warning of the dangers but being ignored. many mistakes happened. Thats whats great about this film not only does it entertain you it informs you without being held back by studio execs.

The sounds of the planes and the gunfire really bring it home on this bluray especially if you have any type of sound system to enjoy it.

In The Heat Of The Night [Blu-ray]
In The Heat Of The Night [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Sidney Poitier
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A film that should be required at schools I think to show what the world used to be like, 25 Jun. 2015

A beautiful bluray conversion, I have always loved this film from the start, picture is what I expected and so is the sound. The story is what most people know and the extra's help when the director explains how scared they were at that period to film it in the south due to racial tensions, especially when one night they had a mob at the hotel they were staying at. We always forget what it was like at the time these things happened, just like war we must remember to not repeat it again.

Poitier and Steiger are amazing, they work with each other so well and a supporting cast that just raises it up to a higher level.

A worthwhile watch for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy film of human loss on the battlefield and its effects, amazing., 25 Jun. 2015

This review is from: Dunkirk [DVD] [1958] (DVD)
Brilliant movie depicting the dunkirk part of the war from the eyes of several soldiers just trying to get home, its gritty when it needs to be, especially the scene where the french villagers are walking along the road and don't like the British soldiers because to them all the brought was the war, they then leave them to see them slaughtered by a German plane. Slowly as they make there way back to the beach front in Dunkirk we see them lose there comrades along the way and the effect it has on them all.

Nicely cut in between this is whats occurring across the channel in England and how they got together a rag tag fleet of ships from anyone who had a boat to sail across the sea to collect the waiting and dying men. Richard Attenborough has a wonderful part as the at times cowardly and scared man who wants no part of the war but eventually realizes you cannot hide from it forever. And there is Bernard lee (remembered by many as the original "M" in james Bond) rallying people together and then losing is life on the beach itself.

This film also show the lack of foresight by the relevant government about how to handle the dunkirk withdrawal and who suffered at there hands.

This is a film that is meant to make you realize what happened and not to repeat it again, whether we head that warning is to be seen but its memorable.

I liked this film mainly for the fact that roger moore actually got to let down his guard in the character of Ffolkes, a man who despises women to a degree and prefers the company of cats, has a keen mind and says what he thinks. Anthony Perkins totally reveled in his role as the main Terrorist, a part he walked through with ease, shame films like this really aren't made any more. Shot in the day when England made good quality films that everyone could watch.

I remember seeing some of these things shown on tv never to b seen again especially the into infinty film, I really could ahve seen this going on to something else even though it was actually made as an educational tool.

As per usual you can see why gerry andersons production team excelled at tv work, you see quality at times that for the time period was amazing, no one seems to have ever caught up with him and taken his place.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good attempt but came at just the worng time when production values were kept cheap., 25 Jun. 2015

So glad to see this since the ast time was when it came out in the late eighties, Simon Dutton was actually a very good saint, he looked good in the action sequences which unfortunately they didn't give him many, he certainly looked the art more than Ian Ogilvy did in the seventies. If you imagine someone as the saint body build wise he was more set for the part but he did seem to be a bit unsure when he was in suits, bit stiff and uncomfortable. As per usual they got a beautiful car (Jensen Interceptor) and location were good around London and in Australia.

As this was originally funded between England, Australia and Europe they obviously had to film in these places, the main two were good but the europe ones were a bit strange and very slow. The dvd set is Australia (region 4 I believe) but it says on the amazon page they work in the UK, they worked okay on my player but it is region free. Picture quality at times goes a bit odd and they appear to be copies made form tape as at times you get odd lines going up the screen or glitches which we all remember from the days of video cassette recorders. The quality on the ones filmed in Europe are pretty poor with a lot of grain showing, shame.

To me the period bit is where they film at the east german/west german border, being filmed just as it came down that year.

Also a bit of a shame in those episodes the saint has some aides who help him but you never really get to know them as well as one in England, the stories could have been slicker and appeared to be one hour scripts stretched to make them longer than that by half.

You can see where some thought went into it and then they cut corners, the music for starters is very much the period and seemed like it was added with no thought, editing got sloppy and at times you even wondered if they had a director.

All in all a shame but a good look at what could ahve been and if the proper people had been in charge I think it would have taken off making Simon Dutton a memorable Saint.

I say watch and give him a chance because when he gets to really work his craft in the part it is rather good.

Sound and picture are beautiful, good to hear the John Williams score in 5.1 stereo, really only wanted the first two films but the deal was to good to ignore. Some nice behind the scenes programs and such a shame that so many of the stars are no longer with us. It still beats the revamps they have created recently of this character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie series, 15 Nov. 2013

Now I am not a big zombie or cut people up type of film person but I do like these as it doesn't go in that direction so much and you have characters that you get to understand but not to much so you lose the film. The effects are as always top notch, the music (which to me is always one the most important things in a movie) is always actually enjoyable at times, some bits get a bit over worked. The story idea was actually very clever the fact that they are all in a special training and experimentation facility, occasionally the CGI landscapes look a bit fake, for example the red square, moscow bit, it just doesn't look right somehow plus some explosions and the chain saw piece where the zombie soldier is killing one of the rescuers, the blood splatter part is very computer generated look.

But its very entertaining and immensely enjoyed.

The bluray quality is good, sound even better 5.1

Extras are interesting as always, a favourite with me, but you always want a little more.
