Dialect of the Southern Counties of Scotland: its Pronunciation, Grammar and Historical Relations, with an Appendix on the present limits of the ... divisions of the Lowland Tongue,The (1873)
by James A. H. Murray
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.60

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Dynamite - Brilliant, 6 Jan 2013
The historical introduction to this book - the first 100 pages - is pure gold. But it will no doubt be hated by today's revisionists. Murray was not influenced by the modern Scots Nats zeitgeist; instead he tells Scottish history and the history of the Scots 'language' honestly, exactly as it really was. An eye opener. A must read for every Scot, and anyone interested in Scotland. (Murray was no crank by the way, in his day he was the most famous lexicograper in the world, and the first editor of the OED.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Reynard, 25 Aug 2009
This review is from: Reynard the Fox (Paperback)
The fox was strong, he was full of running,
He could run for an hour and then be cunning,
But the cry behind him made him chill,
They were nearer now and they meant to kill.
They meant to run him until his blood
Clogged on his heart as his brush with mud,
Till his back bent up and his tongue hung flagging,
And his belly and brush were filthed from dragging ...

The words speak for themselves! No review can better them.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class, 17 July 2009
This is how all historical adventure stories should be told - raw, brutal, fast and savage.

And it's all true.

A thrill a minute - and you get an education too!

Excellent.

The two sequels are just as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 14 Aug 2007
This review is from: The Sound of Laughter (Hardcover)
This was surprisingly enjoyable; very good in fact. But to taste the difference between a merely very good read and a great one then read Bill Bryson's Thunderbolt Kid. Bryson is the real deal: he really does blow your socks off with laughter. Maybe when PK has had 25 years more practice he will be that good too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed, 14 Aug 2007
This review is from: Street Dreams (Paperback)
Good crime-thriller but with a needless/pointless sub-plot, and which overall just runs into the sand with a disappointingly weak ending.

No one will read this twice.

Probably the funniest book book I have read in the last fifty years. Bryson is a comic genius who also manages to capture and distil the raw spirit of time and place (1950/60s Des Moines, Iowa). Quite remarkable. Buy it, read it, then read it again!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 6 Aug 2007
Overhyped. An unexpected best seller that will be really appreciated only by women, and Guardian Readers.

Well written but far too worthy to be enjoyable. No one will ever read this a second time.
