4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a Frightener !, 23 Mar 2013

The idea of what might happen if a lift full of strangers suddenly stops and the lights go out etc. etc. will be enough to haunt anyone after watching this film. It's really quite a nice idea for a horror story ; and I thought it was done well. It's certainly a film that keeps your attention !

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Car Crash !!!, 23 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought I'd seen it all with the police car crash in Blues Brothers No. 1 . . . but the one in this film manages to beat it by a fair bit !!! Quite amazing . . . and almost worth watching just because of that ! The story, the humour and the ideas in this sequel aren't as good as in the first BB film, it's true ; but the music is always excellent and I enjoyed it, I have to say.

I have always loved this charming film which somehow manages to say so much about teenagers in their everyday lives, both at home and at school. With its lovely, gentle humorous touches, it's a joy to watch. And somehow - although I grew up far away from Scotland ! - it always manages to bring back memories. It's one of those films that may not be outstandng ; but it's one you will always want to see again sometime . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Factual History at its best, 3 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Here given are the basic, raw facts behind what occurred during this awful global conflagration - much of it being relatively little known ( at least to me ! ) prior to reading the book. The thinking BEHIND the thinking is often explained, in terms of the REAL strategic and political interests that lay at the heart of decision-making, not only by the major proponents of the Second World War ( Germany, Britain, the Soviet Union, Japan and the USA ), but also by those of lesser - but not necessarily less interesting - note ( and including those of individual politicians and decision-makers, some of whom are not always often mentioned elsewhere ). There are also reams and reams of interesting statistics given, in order to better explain the real horror and damage that this dreadful war caused - it's a successful attempt to take the episode away from some of the clichés that we have all come to know over the years. For the "serious" hobby historian of World War II, the book is, in my opinion, essential reading, and I must applaud Mr. Ponting - not only for his backbone and moral rectitude w.r.t. the "Belgrano Affair" - but also for his obviously brilliant research, his constantly unprejudicial analysis, and, not least, for his most eloquent prose ( which is always most enjoyable to read ) - a marvellous book, and one to be highly recommended !

Alicia Keys - The Diaries [DVD] [2002]
Alicia Keys - The Diaries [DVD] [2002]
Dvd ~ Alicia Keys
Offered by Bridge_Records
Price: 4.00

3.0 out of 5 stars A little overlong, for what it is . . ., 3 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Alicia Keys may be a wonderful singer and a tremendous musician, but to basically watch her ( and her fellow musicians . . . and there are quite a lot of them ), for an hour and more, doing this and that on tour - none of it particularly exciting and interesting - is something which will perhaps only appeal to the diehard fan. The interviews with her are probably what make the film most worth seeing and hearing ; she is as attractive a personality as she is an artist ( and beautiful woman ! ). So, it's perhaps best seen with some simultaneous use of the fast-forward button . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars A little stereotyped . . . but GREAT all the same !, 3 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The cartoon-like aspects of some ( repeat, some ) of the film make much of the parodying rather stereotyped - in particular, as the film was made during the war and necessarily serves, at least to some extent, as allied propoganda. But much of these most cartoon-like scenes are genuinely funny, even clever ; and the exhaltation of the kinder, "human" aspects of Man's Spirit, including the love we can and should have for one another if only we wish it, is not only touching and well carried-off ; it also reminds us of a vital message, too often forgotten, for all Humankind. The last scene of Chaplin appealing for another, better way is artistically forceful and really quite moving ; one of the best scenes in all of film history ( in my humble opinion ), almost Shakespearean in its power and its significance. The combination of comedy ( even slapstick ) and moral philosophy works, at times almost brilliantly, even if the film may today come across as a little dated and from another time. It is, therefore, a definite "Comedy Classic", and essential viewing . . . but is definitely NOT a film to be watched quite as lightly, or as even as easily, as some might think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, if you like electric folk !, 26 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
And I do like this kind of electric folk music !
Not only is the choice - and the quality - of the songs played good, not to say excellent ; they are all flawlessly played . . . and with a passion that can only come from honest artistic intent.
This is electric folk as it should be played live. A particular highlight in my opinion is the song "Red and Gold" ; an emotional song rendered in emotional fashion by Simon Nicol - I enjoy it greatly, every time.
Only thing is, the DVD is a little short - another 15 or 20 minutes would not have gone amiss - but regarding the quality of what you do get ( 7 or 8 songs ), no complaints whatever !

4.0 out of 5 stars Classics, good songs . . . and a dud or two, 20 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Single Man (Audio CD)
This album contains an interesting mixture of songs of different styles - some fast, some slow; some loud, some quiet; some sensitive, some in-your-face . . . and even what is virtually an instrumental ( "Song for Guy" ); unfortunately, the result is that one or two songs are not quite so pleasant to listen to ( e.g. "Big Dipper" and the really quite awful "Madness", where - unusual for Elton John - there is rather more shouting or ranting than singing to be heard ). "Song for Guy" is, however, such a beautiful classic ( and a strong candidate for being Elton's best ever song ) that it alone would make the album worth buying, even if all the other songs were merely mediocre. That, however, is far from being the case - "Part Time Love", "Shine on Through" and "Georgia" being some other very notable stand-out tracks. Although this reissue contains 5 further bonus tracks that were not on the original album and that are actually rather mediocre, this fact cannot take anything away from the top quality of most of the rest . . . and the record can, after all, be switched off after the final lovely strains of the last "official" track, "Song for Guy", fade and die in the air.

Putting children or teenagers into roles normally all reserved for adults at least twice their age results in a film that is really quite quaint and interesting to watch, particularly because it's so professionally executed and produced. Of course, it has to be a musical for it to work - considering the "hard" and potentially vicious background to the film, viz. gangsters, racketeering, murder and molls ; but it's the contrast between the "soft" and the "hard", the ( extremely young-looking ) kiddies and ( in the back of ones mind ) Al Capone, that keeps it interesting and amusing to watch ( despite the lack of an interesting or exciting storyline ), particularly because many real-life "adult props" ( e.g. the cars and the guns ) are converted into nothing more than toys, suitable only for youngsters. The songs and the music compensate for the lack of any really interesting dialogue ; although full credit must be given to many of the young actors for simulating the "gangster-speak" - and the associated hard-nosed, tough adult dialects - so well. In fact, some of the music is really rather good !

Tantrums & Tiaras [DVD] [2008] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Tantrums & Tiaras [DVD] [2008] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Elton John

4.0 out of 5 stars So he's human, after all . . ., 6 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is basically a collection of home movies, filming Elton as he moves between his various homes and his concert tours. Questions regarding his feelings and his views on a variety of things, some quite banal and everyday, are answered in a most informal manner, revealing what the man - rather than the artist, the musician or the pop star - is ( possibly ) really like. Particularly interesting are the scenes with his mother and grandmother, where some of Elton's follies of the past are openly addressed ; they show him to be sensitive and sympathetic, and amazingly down-to-earth - in fact, they are also quite moving, as a result of them being so unstaged and genuine. The outrageous showmanship seems to come from another world, possibly from quite another person - in this film, Elton appears ( underneath all the money ) to be amazingly normal, after all ; almost like the next-door neighbour !! That's what makes it so refreshing, and - for all fans of the man - a very well worthwhile buy.
