An intriguing story from 1976 (filmed in 1975) - a relic from the past enables two teenagers to time travel between the 1970s and the Georgian period, where they set about trying to free a black slave boy. Sometimes constrained by the studio bound filming, this is nethertheless carefully staged and authentic. Great care is taken to produce a period setting. It is well written and acted and the plot twists and turns to good effect. It is such a shame that only three episodes remain of the original seven. But don't let that put you off. The three that remain are well worth seeing (thankfully we have the first and last episodes, as well as the third) and give a tantalising insight to what was obviously a cracking story. And its great to see Spencer Banks who previoulsy shot to fame as one of the stars of Timeslip (another Children's TV sci-fi adventure from earlier in the decade). The is well worth a view and the price is reasonable too.

At 13 episodes this production is just way too long. 6 or 7 episodes would have been much better. The good points are the opening episodes, the sets and Ron Moody. However, there are a number of significant flaws: Firstly, the pace of the programme. It just grinds to a snails pace after the first four episodes. It is just too slow. Secondly, the plot! To be honest, you can predict how this will end after the first five or six episodes. It just takes too long to get there. Thirdly, the two main child characters...great to start with, but by the end you just no longer care! You become irritated at their whinging and moaning and crying. Fourthly, the dialogue! Too much of it (including the French accent) are mumbled. You strain to hear what is being said. And, by the end, I just gave up! Not be watched again by me...anybody want a second hand copy?

Doctor Who: The Leisure Hive [DVD]
Doctor Who: The Leisure Hive [DVD]
Dvd ~ Tom Baker
Price: 6.51

3.0 out of 5 stars Exploding K9......and weird science!, 23 Jan 2011
This is Jonathan Nathan Turner's (JNT) first story as producer of Doctor Who, and things are looking different:
- A new outfit for Tom Baker
- A re-vamped theme tune and opening sequence
- Removal of comic one-liners
- New incidental music
- Weird science that is now based on scientific fact
Furthermore, JNT's open dislike of K9 is evident in the opening sequence - where the mechanical dog meets an explosive encounter with the English Channel!
But is the story any good? Well, it's not that bad. The basic premise concerns a race of people on the planet Argolis that have survived a nuclear war with the reptilian Foamasi- the only problem is that the Argolians are now sterile and so are dying out! Argolis is now a tourist planet, attracting visitors to see the Leisure Hive where they can see Tachyonics in action - weird science that can duplicate and manipulate organic matter. But all is not well - humans have come to exploit a failing economic situation; the Argolians are desperate for Tachyonics to provide for the ongoing survival of their species; and renegade factions of Foamasi are on the loose. And added to this mix are the Doctor and Romana who get caught up in a sensitive diplomatic situation that is fuelled by murder and corruption. All in all, an interesting story that develops at a good pace with some excellent cliff hangers. Tom Baker is obviously no longer enjoying his role, and reports of personality clashes on set obviously contribute to his slightly lacklustre performance. But don't let that put you off - there is plenty here to entertain and surprise!
Finally, there are some excellent extras on this DVD, including a feature on the changes that were introduced by JNT, a look at the costume design and trip with Blue Peter to Longleat!

3.0 out of 5 stars Baker going through the motions...but still fun!, 17 Jan 2011
This review is from: Doctor Who - Meglos [DVD] (DVD)
Well, what can you say about Meglos. Probably the lightest story and the comic turn of season 18, leading as it does to the more deep and serious e-space trilogy. Baker going through the motions both as the Doctor and Meglos. Already, the sparkle is going. It's almost as if Tom is preparing for his exit from the show...! The heart and soul is no longer in it! But it is good fun. The scene with Meglos (the cactus) and the Gaztaks (space pirates) in episode 1 is great, and the special effects are superb for 1980. Also, the concept of the chronic hysteresis is huge fun, although the escape is somewhat of a let down. Also, there are a couple of good cliff-hangers thrown in. However, the main problem with this show is that you just don't really care about either of the main protagonists on the planet Tigella. You warm to neither the scientists or the those that partake in the cult worship of the Dodecahedron. Not enough effort was made in developing the characters, or explaining more of their history. On the plus side, the extras are good, containing as they do a very fitting tribute to Jacqueline Hill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely Entertaining, 11 Feb 2009

Sheriff Tex Tucker ia a lawman with a difference. His guns can fire by themselves and his horse (Rocky) and dog (Dusty) have the power of speach. And all because of the four magic feathers in his hat, a gift from Indian Chief Kalamakooya in gratitude for saving his son.

I've been a big fan of Gerry Anderson for many years, but had never seen this particular series. At first I was skeptical (on viewing the first episode) but this series just grows on you. I became hooked - the characters are wonderful, from Tex Tucker, to Dusty and Rocky, through to the villains of Pedro, Fernando and Big Ben. All are wonderfully portrayed even though they are sterotypical good guys and bad guys. But that's okay. This is uninhibited cracking good fun! And there is also a musical treat in every episode! 'Two Gun' Tex Tucker has a song for every situation - this is a particular highlight - he plays a mean guitar and sings really catchy songs. My 8 year old enjoys this series, which just goes to show that it has withstood the test of time. Picture and sound quality (although not digitally restored) is good, but there are occassional blemishes (e.g. sound quality on episode 8 is poor). But I'm prepared to forgive Network DVD for that. A wonderful show from Gerry Anderson. And huge thanks to Network DVD for releasing this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Picture and Sound, 28 Jan 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to agree with Mr Smith. The quality of the film and sound is truely awful. So awful in fact, that I would have to say that this is the worst transfer to DVD that I have ever witnessed! Far from being nostalgic, it totally ruins what should be good viewing. It is unwatchable. Surely, the whole point of digital media is that it enables images and sound to be restored and experienced in excellent quality. DD Home Entertainment should be ashamed of themselves for releasing this series in such poor condition. This show deserves better.
