5.0 out of 5 stars Action adventure in Medieval England and France., 18 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have recently finished reading this book (January) and it feels like a good preparation for watching Wolf Hall! There is a good story line and believable characters and settings. The author takes us into the nitty gritty of ordinary lives in the 15th and early 16th century. There is plenty of action as the characters are moved from a monastic to a military setting where loyalties and factions are explored. Terminology of the time ( I imagine it is as accurate as records permit us to know) strengthens the sense of time and place and immediacy. I enjoyed every page!

3.0 out of 5 stars Watercolour brushes worth a try., 15 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is my first experience of these brushes which are inexpensive compared to sable, have a good point, retain liquid and are reasonably soft. The handle and ferrule seem to be well made. I chose a no8 and No10. They are both good brushes. Are they as good as a sable? After a few days and a couple of paintings, I would say not but that the margin isn't much. But then the main is never much. They do seem to have more desirable properties than some other man made fibre brushes, so worth a try. I suspect that the larger ones, e.g. No 20 may well feel different again.
They are well endorsed by notable professionals.
Delivered by Jacksons, the service from them was first class.

A rollicking good yarn in the traditional style with a strong story line and good characters. Shades of 39 Steps.

The Treasure Hunt: The Inspector Montalbano Mysteries - Book 16
Price: £3.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspector Montalbano in print., 20 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been watching Inspector Montalbano on the TV and this is the first book about him that I have read. It's a good story with the same characters as seen on TV. It has thoughtful passages , more so than the programmes. In the book, Montalbano is perhaps a little older and more reflective. Good story line and a pleasant light read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A long read, 29 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a book I have yet to finish, being 75% of the way through, despite having no other book on the go at present. The story of the life of Gilmour is in many ways a sad one. Here, he is portrayed as an intelligent man who suffered both for the US penal system and from his own uncontrollable personality. Once he is sentenced then the story takes in the media interest in making capital out of him and his fate. In many ways this is just as unsavoury as his life.
Mailer handles the material in journalistic style and if he makes judgements then it is perhaps in his selection of material rather than in any comments of his own.
Though long, it is an interesting read and case history.

dodocool Remote Control Wireless Presentation Presenter Mouse With Laser Pointer
dodocool Remote Control Wireless Presentation Presenter Mouse With Laser Pointer

5.0 out of 5 stars Control your presentations remotely., 13 Nov. 2014
This little gadget does what it says it will. It worked well in a recent presentation in a moderately sized church hall with a Windows laptop. The red laser is bright enough to be seem on slides in a room where the lights were left on during the slide show. Controls on the side allow for slides to be played forward and back. The USB link is inside the controller.
Having this makes all the difference to a slide presentation by giving you full control. Well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, sharp, weighty, 13 Nov. 2014

As other reviews have said these are weighty and solid. They also crunch through hedges and undergrowth and most parts of a garden that need tidying. That said, I have only had one gardening session using them so far but I think that they will give good service.

This review is from: Eye of the Needle (Kindle Edition)
This is an enjoyable, undemanding yet well constructed thriller , convincingly set in its period. Its very predicability is part of the attraction. The principal character comes to a well deserved end in a suitably dramatic setting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light thrills, 22 Aug. 2014

A light thriller for a light thrill. I have to say that it kept me reading which just shows that pace matters more than plot! The claim on the cover is hardly substantiated but it chugs along quite happily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pace and colour afloat, 6 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this book. The story moves with pace and the colourful characters and places fill the pages. Emma didn't chose an easy life afloat and we get a sense of the hard work in some of her boats, and , unmentioned, the work involved in recording material for this book. It was also an adventure not without personal risk, and whilst this adds zest to the story, one imagines that not everyone who follows this route to happiness, will find quite as positive an outcome. But Emma is a skilful journalist ( and by the by, a decent sailor too) and I felt that she can tell a good story, which for this book, is all that matters. I hope that there is a sequel.
