The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives
The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent title - great book, 10 Jun 2014

True Sebastian Faulks dissecting the tragic lives of three short but brilliant lives with all his literary flair. I knew about one of the three lives, but had never even heard of the other two and this book has left me desperate for more. The links between the three men, none of whom knew each other, was poignant.

I'm sorry to have finished it.

This review is from: Sanctus (Kindle Edition)
A novel similar in concept to Dan Browne's The Da Vinci Code, but far better written (but to be fair, so are most novels). The characters lack a little depth, all being single minded in whatever they are seeking to achieve, so everything is black and white with no shades of grey. But the story is interesting and well thought out, if a little far fetched.

I enjoyed the book, but don't think I will read the remainder of the trilogy, as I suspect they will be similar stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who started the war, 1 Jun 2014

An interesting read that neatly sums up the causes of the First World War and shows that there was no clear cut nation at fault, but that the blame lay mainly with Germany, Austria and Russia. Easy to read and understand, but spoilt by some poor grammar in places.

Even though admittedly partisan he doesn't try to hide anything. Gives a really good and easy to follow account of the politics leading to involved in the Civil War without the tedious military explanations

Really well written, manages to make the politically humdrum entertaining reading. The fact that it is not full of quotes written in centuries old English helps.
