3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and dark thriller, 16 April 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I thought this was a very interesting and complex drama. The relationships between the two couples is very intricate and you're never sure which character to trust which makes the story refreshingly intriguing, if at times a little slow. The landscape is beautiful and setting most of the action on a train gives the film some dynamism. Harellson and Mortimer are great as are the supporting characters, including Ben Kingsley who is quite disconcerting and scary as a (corrupt/legit?) police officer. There is a mixture between unexpected fast paced action sequences and slow, atmospheric scenes which is quite mesmerising to watch.

What Maisie Knew (Classics)
What Maisie Knew (Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 19 Oct 2006
This is another classic from the James collection. What Maisie Knew is a masterpiece- the reader has an ant's eye view of the adult world through Maisie's eyes. Essentially we witness the violent pumelling of a young child by her parent's manipulative scheming; she is used throughout as a go-between and epitomises, sadly, the position many children find themselves in when a divorce is handled terribly by parents. Maisie becomes intertwined in an adult world of bitterness, violence, sordid affairs and irresponsibility yet luckily, the tale is saved from the depths of sordid tragedy by the lovely Mrs. Wix who takes Maisie under her wing, so to speak, and shows real affection. James very much enforces the notion of parental responsibility in this incredibly poignant tale of a little girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 19 Oct 2006
This is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The acting is absolutely phenomenal; simple yet incredibly powerful in its economy of emotion. The film explores the theme of forbidden love within the constraints of marriage and responsibility. Meyl Streep and Clint Eastwood really shine in this masterpiece which challenges our notions of what really is important in life. This is a heartbreaking film. ( Just by thhe way :At first I was somewhat dubious of the perhaps unnecessary use of flashback (ie her children in the future) but if you persevere I think this effect just embellishes the story.) The cinematography is absolutely stunning. I highly highly highly recommend this film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 16 April 2005
This is such a funny and charming film- THANK YOU SANDRA BULLOCK for being able to make fun of yourself unlike so many other beautiful Hollywood actresses who take themselves so seriously. Gracie Hart is a charming "Dirty Harriet" FBI agent sent on an undercover mission in a beauty pageant. Bullock combines physical comedy with sarcasm and it's not hard to have a smile screwed on your face throughout the movie- not only does Bullock shine as bright as a beauty queen's teeth but the supporting cast are fabulous, especially Shatner and Burns. Nevertheless, it is Michael Caine and Sandra Bullock's rapport which is really great- yes the one-liners are hilarious. The DVD extras are really cool- Bullock is great because she actually likes doing the commentary so it's not boring. Anyway I really love this film and highly recommend it to anyone- Sandra Bullock really is beautiful and Benjamin Bratt is pretty hansome too. Enjoy :)

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING, 15 Feb 2005
This review is from: An Actor Prepares (Paperback)
This is a truly amazing book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to go beyond the classical approach to theatre and get to grips with the essence of a play and a character. This book is like the actor's Bible and really shows how you can get to truth in your acting in a comprehensive, lesson by lesson approach by one of the greatest acting teachers whose work has been continued to this day, inspiring actors such as the great Marlon Brando, Robert de Niro, Dustin Hoffman etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 15 Jan 2005
This review is from: Beyond Borders [DVD] (DVD)
This is a truly great film exploring the horrors of life on the field- Jolie and Owen's characters are inspirational. Especially for Angelina Jolie this film is exceptionally personal as it rings an autobiographical touch- she has spoken of her previous ignorance of these vital issues and actively sought to change the world through her work with the UN. The film is touching and throughout, you know how much passion came into the making of it- since Hollywood is usually allergic to themes of world poverty. I really enjoyed this film and would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a great album!, 15 Jan 2005
I think part of the album's greatness lies in its diversity- the beats are pretty much hip hop latino which = amazing to shake it to, yet the music applies to so many moods and the order in which the songs play is well thought out. The lyrics actually have important messages to them, which I think is great in a world where "hip pop" usually surfaces as aggressive and misogynist. Elephunk is really cool: BEP fans should'nt expect the same as their former albums but give Fergie and the new beats a chance because they are great! (Maybe minus the corny commercial addition of Justin Timberlake- but that's only in like one song and you can barely notive it). Best song: Let's Get R*tarded ( a lot better than the pc version Let's Get it Started)- but every song's is really great in my opinion! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 13 Jan 2005
This is such a great movie- It is so so powerful and Angelina Jolie is fabulous in it. There are some beautiful shots, as well as some other a bit tacky ones which still pass as cool in my books. It is really a tragic story, and highlights the sometimes tragic consequences of when someone's youth is taken too quickly. Gia's complete strength shines throughout the film and Jolie also infuses the character with a heartbreaking sense of vulnerability, emphasising the humanity of Gia. Enjoy the film!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars HMMMMMM....., 8 Jan 2005
This film I found to be OK- the plot was pretty good and the characters unusual. The film is based on a book and this is obvious in that the film is full of literary twists, which probably work better in the book- for instance several characters just appear for a brief moment and aren't developed as fully as perhaps they should- I liked this story as essentially it is a love story of the underworld, of infatuation and lust and this is conveyed remarkably well by Banderas and Jolie, who really do have a special on-screen chemistry. However, perhaps one should consider that this film was never released on DVD in Britain and I can't remember it adorning our screens either- so maybe if you're after a cinematic experience- i.e a fantastic film, perhaps you should give it a miss, otherwise if you love Angelina or Banderas or are just looking for a Saturday night sexy kind of flick- then go for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet, 8 Jan 2005
This film is extremely sweet. The characters are very well developed and Natalie Portman's character is truly believable- you at once empathise with her. Life throws these awful bombshells her way and yet she deals with them in such a strong, independent and accepting manner. Portman's humility exudes as does Novalee's bravery against all odds. I found this film great to watch as a Sunday evening feel good flick- you can tell it was adapted from a book which usually puts me off however they all pull it off very nicely.
