5.0 out of 5 stars Comic history, 9 April 2013

The entire series is great both as an illustrated history and a realistic portrayal of the realities of war (albeit and old one), Be aware that it is from a weekly boys comic from long before the concept of Graphic Novel was conceived. It show its origins: the individual episodes are bite-sized (3 pages), there is invariably a cliff-hanger and some of the characters at first may seem overdone caricatures (mostly less so as they recur in the series, although I don't think Charley's brother-in-law is every given a redeeming feature). I was familiar with its pedigree and consider it all the more remarkable give the original forum in which it appeared. Oh, and the artwork is fabulous.

The follow up episodes don't quite hit the sweet spot that is Thompkinson's school days. I was tempted to drop a star for that, but figured it was too harsh. Should be able to give half stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point - as Dredd should be, 9 April 2013

It's a miracle this got made after the train wreck that was the Stallone version. Not to everyone's taste, I'm sure, but uncompromising and faithful to the essence of the source material. It might take you outside your comfort zone.
