The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers
The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers
by Dave Wentz
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £14.34

5.0 out of 5 stars Every home should have one ... get yours now, 8 April 2011
I am so grateful for this book as it covers in a simple way most of the key issues I consider important in being the CEO of My Own Life. These are the simple daily things that make a huge difference that demonstrate that we are walking the talk with doing what we can do to live healthy lives and protect our environment. I am a Certified Team Leader for Dr Ray Strand's Healthy for Life programme as outlined in Healthy for Life: Developing Healthy Lifestyles That Have a Side Effect of Permanent Fat Loss and this covers nutriton, nutritional supplements, water and exercise - the Wentz book gives a more holistic coverage for your home.

The book covers the environment in which you live in - your home, office and your car because you spend time there too - and spells out the dangers of household items that may be less obvious than food, water and exercise like chemicals, preservatives, emf and electronics, air and even the clothes that we wear. These are big topics yet the book is simply written from the point of view of the author Dave Wentz as a dad looking out for his his newborn son. Grandfather Myron Wentz gives his scientific viewpoint in separate parts in each chapter if you want a more technical explanation.

The information is presented room by room in the house starting in the bedroom and ending up in the garden. There is a scoring system which helps to identify good and bad points and areas for improvement. After some time working from home I have now given each room an audit, restocked with healthy natural alternatives, thrown out the junk and given the house a good spring clean from top to bottom. The recycling people and charity shops are delighted and we feel better for no clutter. Thats got to be a good step in these austere times - we're now living more with less if that makes sense.

I have surprised myself by taking positive steps regarding eco and health that I had wanted to do and not had the motivation to do til now - for instance I have cleaned out the freezer and have a storage system so we know whats in there which helps with meal planning. Also I've found a supplier of organic field-grown wheatgrass so thats in the freezer too which makes the morning smoothie really zing - better than having heavy meat in the evenings.

There is an interactive website which closely examines several common household problems and offers solutions that you can begin implementing right away. The information goes beyond what is offered in the book, so you'll definitely want to check it out to get a complete picture of how to develop healthier habits. In order to use all of the features, you'll have to register with a book code that you'll find in the back of your copy of The Healthy Home.

I urge you to get your copy now - I won't be lending mine out as I don't tend to get good books back.

Instinct Putting: Putt Your Best Using the Breakthrough, Science-Based Target Vision Putting Technique
Instinct Putting: Putt Your Best Using the Breakthrough, Science-Based Target Vision Putting Technique

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you're already a good putter, this will help, 28 May 2010
Within a few weeks, I had reduced my putting stats from 37 to 34 putts a round. It does take a bit of courage to use this technique in competitive events but as a practice technique and certainly as part of your pre-shot routine, this is a must. I've now got better feel for length but beware you don't lose your alignment as hitting off the sweet spot of your putter negates the benefits of your improved feel. You can use your peripheral vision more effectively and increase your awareness with this method. Note that by not looking at the ball, you can focus on the target and this helps keep a clear mind with positive intentions without the hang-ups of whatever mental baggage you may have interfering with your stroke.

p.s. now averaging 30 putts and down to 8.8 handicap (8 April 2011)

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, stylish and effective, 28 May 2010
Just try it - its almost instant energy ... it may or may not work for you but its great for us .... we're active people and have a few other gadgets and take nutritional supplements. I have more vitality (all the stated benefits of strength, balance and flexibility) and significantly my partners aching back is no more - we can get a decent nights sleep ... just reading the reviews and testimonials is convincing enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've ever wondered if you're getting what you're paying for ..., 31 Mar. 2009
... then read this fourth edition review of over 1,600 North American nutritional supplements with a ranking from a dozen nutrition experts. There are explanations of inflammation, oxidative stress and degenerative disease.

USANA flagship Essentials and HealthPak 100 nutritional supplements rate 'best of the best' out of 1,600 products evaluated in Canada and United States.

Author Lyle MacWilliam MSc, FP, a former biochemist and educator, released the 1st edition of the guide in 1999 to help consumers make informed, scientifically based decisions about nutritional supplements.

According to the Comparative Guide, companies that receive 5-Star Gold Ratings must meet the "highest standards of quality in research, formulations and manufacturing." The guide also noted that companies awarded the NutriSearch Gold Medal of Achievement(tm) have gone to considerable expense to meet and exceed the most stringent of manufacturing standards.

There were only four companies rated this highly and USANA Health Sciences, the supplier of my trusted nutritonal supplements, is one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn how you can protect your health, 17 Jan. 2009
As a Certified Team Leader under Dr Strand's "Healthy for Life programme", I can vouch for the information in this book.

It presents cutting-edge medical evidence in a simple way and explains how healthy lifestyles improve your health while at the same time allows you to lose weight.

Dr Strand has been applying these principles in his medical practice for the past 10 years. Anyone at risk of being considered overweight or obese or at risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes must read this book.

The answers lie not in drugs pr modern medicine, but in practical healthy lifestyles that Dr Strand details in this book ... do yourself a favour and buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A priceless gift, 17 Jan. 2009
If you care about your health and value quality information in a book then you will love this ... as I did as it fits with my mission to sustain and improve the quality of peoples lives.

The book is well evidenced as it should be as the author is a family physician who has been involved in a private family practice for over 30 years.

Simply put, topics include cholesterol, the root causes of disease and the dark side of oxygen.

Empowering information.

The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight and Gain Health
The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight and Gain Health
by Dean Ornish

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-balanced between science and practical lifestyle recommendations, 22 Jan. 2008
The Spectrum is like an inverted food pyramid with five recommended groups from most healthful to least healthful choice. Dr Dean Ornish has been around for 30 years saying roughly the same thing about nutrition and lifestyle and is now well recognised as being a leader and pioneer of his time. The book provides medical `proofs' and medical industry accolades which makes it easy to trust the content from the outset.

I found it to be well-balanced between science and practical lifestyle recommendations. It has recipes with photos and a guided meditation CD too. There is also emphasis on `belief over biology' matters, to borrow a phrase, meaning the need to take personal responsibility for our health and well-being and the power of mind over matter, in this case genes. It also makes the point that eating for pleasure can outweigh the calories stigma i.e. `live to eat' not `eat to live'.

Despite the 17-page table of representative foods for the five groups, recipes and photos, the first half of the book is set out to respond to the focus on `sickness' much like several other books I endorse which actually makes it more appealing reading! By this I mean it is set out in two parts - the first being an explanation of what the Spectrum involves and the second being how the Spectrum can assist with specific health conditions from losing weight and lowering blood pressure to the degenerative diseases of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Then the second half of the book contains 90-odd recipes, cooking tips, stock list and a fruit and veg season calendar for the American market with universal messages. The recipes look fun and will reinforce choices from other sources. Some have a sentence explaining the recipe and are presented in a friendly way with no exact measures and calorie breakdowns.

I haven't yet listened to the meditation CD nor read the first half in detail and so I am looking forward to picking up on the points of interest I mentioned in the second paragraph. Like with the books written by the USANA doctors, Dr Ray Strand and Dr Ladd MacNamara in particular, I'm grateful to add this book to my sharing collection and because of the recipes, I hope to reach a wider audience from it being kept in the kitchen rather than my study library ... and then I hope to be able to upgrade the 4 star rating.
