The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon (C Series Large Paperback)
The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon (C Series Large Paperback)

I picked this up in a charity shop (sorry amazon!) mostly because i liked the cover. It turned out to be one of the best books i've read in a long time, and i have now ordered the next book (there's four in total). The main character is well-written and believable, and unlike some other reviewers i think there is some literary merit to Zimlers writing! Also, the idea from another reviewer that this is somehow anti-christian is bizzare (and i say that as a christian), it's called history, sadly. The story concerns a young boy and his uncle mostly, who practices kabbalah, during the times of anti-jewish (and anti-anything not 'christian') times, and is reportedly based upon the discovered manuscripts of the young boy. Normally in a book that has a significant number of minor characters, i lose track or begin to not care about some, but Zimler somehow manages to make them likeable. Altogether, Zimler has created a wonderful story that is haunting (i did want to cry at one point!) and memorable, and at the same time, easily read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 28 April 2012
To be honest, i didn't have high hopes for this book. I've read so much about this period in hitory i was stupid and thought that i could read nothing new. I really was stupid! I only picked this book up because the cover is so lovely, and then i saw it had an introduction by Linda Grant, a writer i really like so i thought why not!
The book turned out to be one of the best i've read in a long time. Trudi is a loveable person, and the way in which she writes makes everything absorbing, i finished the book in two days, i almost cried when i read the ending on the jubilee line, must have looked slightly strange, but hey!
Trudi's decriptions of war time London are fasinating, as is her earlier time in Vienna. I also found her writing about the style and fashions of the time more interesting than i thought i would (it's a theme in the book, don't let it put you off if you're not interested in fashion, she writes in a very intelligent way about it, using it to describe someones personality that usually turns out to be true for example!)
It really bought back the harship of the times, for the Jewish people and others in Vienna and other parts of Europe, and also for Britian in a way in which is personal rather than academic, and will make you stop and think, and realise the love between husbands and wives and parents and friends made the period in time bareable, and all writen in an easy-to-read way by a likeable person! I'm currently trying to hunt down the unedited 1984 version! Cannot recommend the book highly enough!

Adolescent Addiction: Epidemiology, Assessment, and Treatment (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional)
by Cecilia A. Essau
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £43.99

4.0 out of 5 stars V.Useful!, 13 Mar. 2012
The book covers almost everything about addiction and adolescence (from neurobiology/genetics/environmental factors/theories/sex addiction/internet etc). Aimed at the clinician or student it is well written by its various authors and helped me a lot with the writing of a very long and painful essay about the subject!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Nora collection, 13 Mar. 2012
This is definatly my favourite Nora Ephron collection, definatly at her best! She covers everything from affairs at the White House to handbags and waxing! It's a book you can delve straight into and read in one sitting, or enjoy essay by essay over an extended period of time, either way it won't loose any humour or entertainment value! Her writing style is chatty yet intelligent, almost like having dinner with a much-loved friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable little book!, 13 Mar. 2012
I bought this book because PTSD is a topic for my Psychopathology module for Uni. Having quite a lot of personal experience with family members with PTSD i am already quite familiar with most of the theories/implications of having the disorder/therapies etc, but for the price i thought this book would be useful in having all the information in one place- and it certainly has been! It contains examples throughout which would be useful for anyone who is buying it to better understand a loved one, or the clinician using it in a clinical setting, or even a person with PTSD so they can know others have the same reations and emotions as themselves. Highly recommended!

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this DVD. It contains some amazing footage! It is a DVD that would be useful for anyone who loves Apes or just thinks they're cute! I bought it because i'm studying Evolutionary Psychology, so for anyone interested in that area the DVD shows a lot of the experiments that you may learn about in an academic setting (although it is heavily edited with one or two experiments shown claiming more than can really be scientifically proved as yet) but overall a fantastic DVD that shows how loveable and intelligent Apes are!

This review is from: I, Maya Plisetskaya (Hardcover)
Maya is my favourite ballerina ever, and i was so glad i enjoyed her book as much as i do her dancing! Surprisingly well written, moving in parts, and covers everything you'd want to know about her dancing & big roles, her life (particularly the impact the politics of Russia at the height of her fame. I'm so glad i found this, i know i'll be re-reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best collections of poetry i own!, 23 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Yeshiva Boys (Hardcover)
I'm not really a huge fan of poetry to be honest, but i came across the title poem of this collection and really enjoyed it so i thought i'd give the book a go! I'm so glad i did! I read it all in two sittings, and had to stop to think about what i had read quite a few times (unusual for me and poetry-either i get it and i like it or i don't!) and i can honestly say i'll be re-reading a lot of the poems for their imagery and honesty.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 star/4 star..., 23 Feb. 2012
Overall i really enjoyed reading the book, it will provide you with an honest account of what it is like to train and work as a mental health nurse with the NHS. At times the author was funny, and made some fasinating insights into his work. However, there were a few grammatical issues that were really quite obvious (they annoyed me and im dyslexic!) and should really have been picked up somewhere along the publishing line! However, if you are wondering about whether to go into this line of work i would highly recommend the book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok...., 23 Feb. 2012
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this to help with my neuropsychology revision, and to that end it has helped. However, it's not much like the picture on Amazon! It's actually grey, and made of foam, and the colour-coded section you can see here is only on half of the brain, the other half is more anatomy-like (which is handily labelled a,b,c etc and defintions of each of these come in a little booklet!). I'm overall pleased with the product, but it is perhaps a little overpriced! (Especially as after a couple of days the two halfs no longer stick together properly!). If you are a visual learner though, this would probably come in very handy!
