5.0 out of 5 stars Opera, you say?, 5 Feb. 2003
When opera is good, you get hooked in emotionally to what is going on. It's hard to see how this music could be more detached from what is going on, but then again...
This being an attempt to explain not only Einstein's theories, but his life as well, and somewhere down the line crossing other themes in there as well, just to cover all bases, it doesn't seem like the whole thing could ever justify five stars.
But listen to it carefully and you'll begin to see the nuances in Einstein's work that have been so eloquently captured here. Further listening reveals more about the Special Theory of Relativity than most of the textbooks on this and many other websites could do.
If you happen (as I did quite by mistake one day to listen to this whilst trying to read something on quantum physics, well, suddenly the world seems so much more invigorating and clearer.
Mind you, people counting to music may just have driven me into insanity, from whence this review came. But if that is the case, I'm happy to stay here listening to this opera for quite some time to come and discovering more of its patterns and logic, which, whilst the rest of the world seems to be coming apart, is no bad thing!

4.0 out of 5 stars What happened?, 5 Feb. 2003
I sat down and started listening to this work, having heard discussions on some late night arts programme on the radio, and wishing fantically I could have seen the staged version. Whether or not this does it justice is hard to say, still after all this time not having seen it, but after having been captivated by the initial tracks, which are clearly designed to hook an audience in from the get-go, I found I was quite entertained by the prospects this music offered me. An unusual mix of classical and not so classical instrumentation leads one to believe that this could appeal quite nicely to the "ambient" music loving generation. If that doesn't satisfy, think of the science fiction theme, the classical styling, and other hinted references which make this piece one of the more crossover style works Glass has ever produced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quiet intensity, 5 Feb. 2003
Typically later Glass in its style this music isn't the sort of thing that grabs you and shakes you to make its point known. You listen for some time and then you find that much to your surprise you are immersed in the music. Not as good as Heroes or Low symphonies, which are more publically accessible, but nonetheless something which with repeated listening grows on you until you get to the end and find yourself wishing it had been just that little bit longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to beat the opposition, 29 May 2002
This review is from: La Revancha Del Tango (Audio CD)
I like Tango. I hate it when people mess around with Tango music. Therefore I was more than prepared to hate this. I was in fact all geared up to hate this. I had my special hatey shoes on.
Then I heard it, and all was forgiven. Allow everyone on the reviewing list their hyperbolae. This is more than deserved. I'm not sure about the review that compares this to sex, because Tango was that already, so that's a tad redundant, but do your hi-fi and your ears a favour and get this CD now!! And if you catch your ears having sex, then I guess the other reviewer was right!
Heartily recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book on Yachts, 2 May 2001
This review is from: Legendary Yachts (Hardcover)
This is more like it! This book is full of excellent line drawings, not to mention the amazing photos. Not quite the standard of Beken, but very very close to the master
