Only watch this film if you like history and like heavy documentaries. Buy a book and read about him instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Forth and buy this excellent CD, 31 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Go Forth (Audio CD)
Got this album as a Xmas gift in 2012 and what a great present it was. The group have matured and improved since winning the BBC Young Folk Musicians Award and have produced a great CD blending Northumbrian, Irish and Scots folk influences to produce a sound that whilst based on traditional tunes still manages to be distinctive and fresh. It is good to see an English group that can create its own distinctive sound whilst borrowing the best influences from all over the UK, Ireland and beyond. The individual playing is superb working together as a band rather than displaying virtuoso performances. One of the best folk albums I have heard over the past two years.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good album spoilt by the producer, 29 Aug. 2012

This review is from: Here I Am (Audio CD)
Once again Oli had produced the goods in terms of song writing, vocals and guitar playing but for me this CD is spoilt by the producer, engineer and drummer Wayne Proctor. The great thing about Oli's last album "Heads I Win" was Mike Vernon's understated production which allowed Oli to showcase his vocals and guitar playing. Wayne Proctor's production has got the sound balance all wrong; he has upped the volume on the drums and the bass as a result the songs have lost all their subtltey and ingenuity and instead we have a regular blues album that a number of less talented artists produce on a regular basis. To make it worse Wayne Proctors drumming is repetitive and boring failing to use original and more imaginative percussion and beats as on Oli's previous CD - a boring heavy metal style. If you love Oli you will still enjoy this album but if you want to buy your first CD to hear him at his best I recommend "Heads I Win". I think overall sales on this album will disapoint Oli, next time please select a better drummer and producer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A young UK blues artist who is fresh but faithfull to the blues tradition., 4 Dec. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Its great to hear a young blues guitarist who is fresh but still faithfull to the blues tradition. Clear sharp vocals, strong song writing and a great band that creates a variety of blues moods and tempo's rather than guitar wizardy result in an oustanding album. The fact he is young and British make it an even better achievement. Far to early to talk about a UK Buddy Guy or Burnside but he does understand their blues tradition and brings it to this album in a fresh style all of his own. A great album with some outstanding tracks and some great, often understated guitar work. I tend to look stateside for blues inspiration, not any more. There is freshness and excitement in every track.

3.0 out of 5 stars 1970's Concept Album, 13 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Arc Light (Audio CD)
Loved the first Lau CD and have loads of the lads individual material. It is therefore disappointing to have to rate this CD as average. I found it very self indulgent with the focus on the individual playing and creating sound rather than music rather like a 1970's prog rock concept album, all bells and whistles but no soul. I am sure this is a one off and without experimenting there wouldn't have been a Lau in the first place.

The 2006 Radio Ballads - The Song of Steel

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story telling with great songs, 26 Mar. 2009
An excellent CD. It is a copy of the radio program so songs are interspersed with tales of the steel workers. Clever use of steel making sounds, they blend with the songs, create a great atmosphere and link the tales from of a bygone industry. Nostalgic but never sentimental. A brilliant piece of radio but you would expect nothing else from John Tam. Don't buy the CD if you expect a series of songs their is a lot of fascinating dialogue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fot fit for purpose, 18 Jan. 2009
I bought a Belkin armband for my i-pod but within 2 months of wearing it to the gym the front perspex cover came off which meant the i-pod could easily fall out, which it did. Recommend anyone who does active sports not to buy one of the worst products I have ever purchased. Expensive, poorly made and not fit for purpose. Belkin should be ashamed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Xmas album ever, 7 Oct. 2008
This CD is a delight capturing the sparkle and fun of Xmas. It is light classical music at its very best. I play Troika and I know the festive season has begun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Music, 26 Aug. 2008
This review is from: In the Moment (Audio CD)
This is an outstanding CD. The fiddle and cello blend perfectly and the individual musicianship is just brilliant. The music has deep celtic traditional roots but sounds fresh and modern with classical overtones. My wife and I toured the Mull of Kintyre with the music totally capturing the beauty of the landscape. Buy it you won't be disappointed as music of this quality is rare.
