5.0 out of 5 stars The Popes! Saints or Sinners, 25 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Popes: A History (Hardcover)
John Julius, has written a very readable book on the Popes as individuals, how they came to be elected, what they did as Pope and how for some of them, what steps they had to take to ensure the Pope could live in Rome and ensure the future of the Papacy.
Not all of them were saints and some of them had very short occupancy of the Papal throne.
This is a must read for all Catholics, and for those who will enjoy reading how the Popes changed history

This book describes the difficulties that arose, when it was decided to base the new National Theater on the South Bank of the Thames in London.
.Olivier was given the task of establishing it.
This gave rise to conflict with The Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford.
It was also difficult for him to manage the theatre and act in the plays presented on the South Bank at the same time. However it all ended well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hornblower Fans, This is for you., 9 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book gives a vivid account of how Navies were made and how they grew,
How technology changed with time, and how this affected the lives of the sailors.
Sadly, this often meant more efficient means of destroying other ships, and other men.
