BestDealUK 95mm UV Filter Lens Protector with Case
BestDealUK 95mm UV Filter Lens Protector with Case

4.0 out of 5 stars A good quality, budget filter for lens protection., 17 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I needed a large inexpensive filter to protect my 500mm mirror lens. As the lens cost less than £140, I did not want to spend another third of that on a filter. This one fits the bill.
Pros: Optically flat, well mounted on a quality metal ring with a good thread. Well presented in a pouch, clean and ready to fit. If you damage it, cheap enough to say "ouch" buy another.
Cons: Not multicoated, so watch out for flare in use. Probably not as high light transmission as a top quality item (e.g. Hoya) I cannot test this. Exactly what wavelengths of UV light are absorbed is not specified, I am not worried by this.
For smaller sizes on my top lenses, I fit multicoated filters from a Hoya. I am very happy with this item for the use intended.

I use a Nikon D600 SLR, generally for jpegs but often for RAW files so they are big, and they can come fast as well if I am shooting birds in flight. This card has a tremendous transfer rate and has never let me down.
I have never tested the water and shock proof capability, but it gives me confidence that they have tested it.

Sigma Cleaning Cloth for Micro Fibre Lens
Sigma Cleaning Cloth for Micro Fibre Lens

Price: £6.94

5.0 out of 5 stars Good size cloth, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good size, works well. If you are cleaning a lot of glass, put gloves on, as the cloth picks up the grease from your hands just as effectively as from a lens! This shortens the life between washes. I have not washed mine yet.
can also be use of course for other optical stuff - microscopes, spectacles, go easy when cleaning plastic sunglasses.

Giottos GTAA1900 Rocket Air Blower - Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Good dust off blower, 11 May 2013

Does what it says on the tin; but more than that, it is a clever design too. Stands on the desk until you need it, you can put it down without looking at it when concentrating on something delicate, rounded tip to avoid catching the object, very controllable. Feels like good quality rubber which will not split; time will tell. It just works.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens
Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Gem, 11 May 2013

This lens is reputed to be one the sharpest lenses around at this focal length, and I would not argue with that. It is also very low in distortion, and fully corrected. Optically top quality, and mechanically lovely to handle. Mostly plastic (metal attachment ring) so probably not as robust as older all metal lenses. But that's what gives it the light weight, and trust Nikon, it will take the workload and use.
Why buy this one?
Small, unobtrusive, lightweight to pop on a camera and use as a carry around lens. Lighter weight and smaller (and possibly less distortion) than the G version with ring motor in it.
Faster aperture than any zoom, to use in low light or for action shots.
On an FX camera it works well: keeps the weight down without compromising what you bought the camera for.
On a DX camera: a narrower field of view and wide aperture makes it excellent for portraits and candids.
(If you need the G version because your camera does not have an internal motor, just go with the G version, it's a good one too). Team it up with the DX 35mm f1.8 because that is a cracker too.
On either an FX or DX camera, if you go out predominantly to use another lens, pop this one in your pocket as well.
It's a little gem.

Duracell are reliable, give plenty of power, and these are inexpensive and good value from Amazon. I use them in my Nikon F3 and they just work. For something as basic as this, don't try to cut costs, just get these.

Hama SLR Rubber Lens Hood 52mm
Hama SLR Rubber Lens Hood 52mm
Price: £11.10

5.0 out of 5 stars Good protection, keeps stray light out., 11 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I like these rubber hoods. Fold flat when not in use, pop out when required. Much quicker than taking a solid hood on and off, reversing it onto the front of the lens, all that stuff takes time.
For a 50mm plus focal length, a circular hood like this is OK. Less than 50mm and you really need a petal type hood to avoid cutting out the light at the sides.
Very securely attached of course when screwed on.
They don't seem to perish with age either, just go on for decades.
Try one, it is not too expensive.

Sigma Lenses (Expanded Guide)
Sigma Lenses (Expanded Guide)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overall textbook on Sigma, 22 April 2013

I wanted a general listing and introduction to Sigma lenses to understand the range available. This is it. Each current lens is described and a subjective evaluation given. Also includes MTF charts for each lens, There is a list of out of date lenses.

The book has limitations: MTF charts as published are of limited use. I would have liked more information even if subjective on distortion, as this is a major feature of wide angle and zoom lenses. I would have like more information on dates of lenses, and an expanded list of out of date ones with their major features and approx dates available. As some lenses have been through many versions, more details on this would have been useful.

As a paperback intro to the range, this does the job well.
