Elementary - Season 1 [DVD]
Elementary - Season 1 [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment, 19 May 2014

This series suggests there is no end to the successful variations that can be devised for the Sherlock formula. The modern day set British television version with Benedict Cumberbatch is rightly viewed as creative and excellent. The cinema period version with Robert Downey Jr is also fantastic. This modern day set American television version ought to be one Sherlock too many but against all the odds is also great fun. It is lighter and less complex than the other current versions but charming, amusing and perfect for a relaxing 40 minutes. Lucy Liu in particular is impressive as a female (obviously) Watson.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Entertaining Series, 3 Oct 2013

Fringe is packed with creative ideas and great performances throughout all 5 seasons. Sometimes the 20 odd episodes can seem a few too many, the many ongoing plot details can be rather complex and some episodes are little below par. Season 4 provided satisfying conclusions to most of the preceding plot lines and prepared the way for season 5, which was shorter and (in my view) the best of all the seasons, with it's semi-seperate tale of a struggle to escape a dystopian Observer dominated future.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Insight Into the Emergence of a great Writer, 3 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The stories are printed chronologically and gradually improve in quality, as might be expexted. It is interesting to follow Leonard's development from a rather 'boy's own' style to the introduction of more intriguing characters and more gripping plot tensions. By the end of the collection it was clear why he is a master of the modern crime story.

This review is from: Oz : Complete Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
This is a little gem of a series if you enjoy an occasional descent into a nightmare world which you know actually exists. Watch 'Oz' and give thanks that however pedestrian your life may appear at least you are not in the living hell which is a men's prison. You also may resolve never to take any action which has the slightest chance of ever causing you to be sent to such a vile place (so perhaps 'Oz' makes a positive contribution to society).

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel, 16 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Killing - Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
The second season of 'The Killing' is up to the standard of the celebrated first season. The good news is it is much shorter (10 instead of 20 episodes) and therefore less needlessly drawn out. The less good news is that the story is even more convoluted and difficult to follow than the first series. Sarah Lund continues to make a charismatic main character and the dark and intriging tone of the narrative continues to hold the viewer throughout.

Broken Trail [DVD]
Broken Trail [DVD]
Dvd ~ Robert Duvall

4.0 out of 5 stars Rbert Duvall makes a great cowboy (or horse boy), 16 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Broken Trail [DVD] (DVD)
Robert Duvall has repeatedly shown his mastery of the strong but essentially warm western patriach figure. He played the role with huge success in 'Lonesome Dove', then 'Open Range' and once again here in 'Broken Trail'. He anchors the venture and is well supported by the rest of the cast, in a story which is both engaging and satisfying. An excellent buy for those who enjoy the (all too infrequent) western productions of more recent years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been better, 16 Aug 2013

This review is from: The Wives of Bath (Hardcover)
An interesting book; well written, with significant feminist themes and intriguing characters but lacking an entirely gripping narrative. It could have been a great read but fell somewhat short.

Captain Britain

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable early work by Alan Moore, 17 Jun 2013

This review is from: Captain Britain (Paperback)
Alan Moore clearly has a talent that was evident from very early in his career. hos work on Captain britain may not be as spectacular as 'Watchmen' but his influencial approach to redefining a an established character and his impressive skill with narrative are right here and lots o fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best film I saw in 2012, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an unusual film with a plot which is very much off the beaten Hollywood track. I do not always enjoy the more quirky kind of film but I loved this one. The usually mainstream film stars were a suprising feature of such one-off movie and all turn in excellent performances, notably Bruce Willis (acting very much against type) and Edward Norton. The two young lead actors were also well cast and the quality of direction seemed faultless, with some very bueatifully constructed visuals. I would recommend this little masterpiece to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this because I hoped some, at least, of the essays would cause me to think about interesting issues in a new way. 3 or 4 of the contributions did exactly what I hoped for, e.g. an essay about the social implications of the menopause now that couples tend to have children later in life (something which I had not considered and yet could have a very deep impact). In an eclectic collection like this you have to expect to find essays which you find irrelevant, uninteresting or even annoying because this is a pot luck experience and each of us have different preoccupations and irritations. It is worth accepting this for the positive side, that if you read enough recommended short pieces of writing (whatever kind of person we are) there is almost certainly going to be a good proportion of essays which you find stimulating and enlightening.
