Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy [with Biographical Introduction]
Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy [with Biographical Introduction]
Price: £0.90

2.0 out of 5 stars No table of contents....beware!, 18 Mar. 2016

Not too many typos....but NO table of contents.....so you can't select a story you just have to plod through the book in order. You also have no idea how afar through each story you are...and some a very long (for short stories...but then this is Tolstoy). It's really not good enough, sorry.

Wonderful. I real voyage of discovery for me...previously I had only know the texts that Vaughan-Williams and Delius had employed in their orchestral works...can dip into this endlessly and be touched every time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wartime story set in France composed in fluent 1960s American!....too culturally jolting to be fully enjoyable., 1 Feb. 2016

This came to me highly recommended by a friend who's opinions I trust and for the most part it was enjoyable and interesting. The short chapters that alternated between the two characters was a neat idea although it did make me feel at times that I was perusing a film treatment. What let me down in terms of the whole experience was the language...and Amazon should really get their act together here. This is a French story...written from a European perspective, yet we are talking about "Eggplants" not Aubergines, "Cookies" not bisquits.....Please! Can't these anomalies be fixed in the e-published versions....for pity's sake. I why can't we encourage Americans to hit the dictionary to find out what an Aubergine is!?
We know what "sneakers" are of course, but that term does not resonate with a story set in wartime France. I am NOT being picky, these are very real distractions and greatly undermine the immersiveness of the experience. I nearly loved the book but the bubblegum language just took it away from me! Amazon, how long would it take to create an "English English" version....??

2.0 out of 5 stars Brideshead regurgitated...give it a miss!, 25 Jan. 2016

This over-long hagiography keeps you reading on the promise of revelations that come to nothing. An overlong tome about a number of uninteresting and eminently dislikeable people! Like a number of the closet gay British writers of the 20th century Waugh took out his anger on just about anyone who wasn't rich, titled or in some way useful to him...an intellectual bully. Ms Byrne insists that he was loved by pretty much everyone who came into contact with him...even the most basic research conflicts totally with that view. Yet the opening few chapters about Waugh's school and Oxford U. life reads like a best man's speech, cringe-making really. I suspect written by a old world snob for surviving snobs, most people will not find interest in someone simply because they are titled or rich..not in this day and age, surely! The plight of Lord Beauchamp was the most interesting part...in that he was a fugitive from justice (OK, sodomy was his "crime"...but it could equally well have been any crime) living around the world with his lovers in serious luxury...the rest, totally dull characters. I was looking for some as wonderful as Selina Hastings's "Secret lives of Somerset Maugham" but this really isn't it!! Sad that Selina Hastings's book on Waugh is not available on Kindle, but I don't think I'll seek out the hardback now because I doubt that even she can make Waugh interesting....

2.0 out of 5 stars pretty awful...waste of a good premise, 25 Jan. 2016

This review is from: ELEPHANT MOON (Kindle Edition)
Could have been a decent story in there somewhere...but this attempt so confused and clumsily written. The whole thing feels like a film treatment...risibly and obviously so at times and it is strange the way it veers between quite ascerbic political point making and a Saturday morning pictures jokey feel with ridiculous pantomime villains and "ain't half hot mum" military caricatures....waste of a really good premise. Pity

Would be great if the indexing worked....You have no way to go directly to a poem from the index....a physical copy of the book would be quicker to navigate. So what is the point...?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the beast it once was..., 13 Jan. 2016

Didn't quite measure up to my expectations as a read...the early parts set in Oxford were highly evocative but the book became less likeable. There is not a single likeable character in the story and the way the religious strain of the story makes it all less relevant than ever. Beautiful prose of course and very well presented Kinle edition..all in English English and very few typos!

These really are not very good. They simply come apart at the seams. It looks like plastic tape has been put over the folding seam but it doesn't do the job. Also be aware that these are smaller than classic box files and will only take A4 size pages.
