5.0 out of 5 stars covers 18 of the famous italian marques, 7 Nov 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great book packed with nostalgic photos and text. Each of the books' 18 chapters covers one of the great italian marques over 250 pages. Photographically there is a lot squeezed into this book with typically 5 or 6 photos on every page. In a way this leaves you wanting more as you realise that to do justice to all 18 marques, covering all aspects of the history of riders, designers, teams, bikes and engines the book would be enormous.
A lot of the photos are fairly small and black & white. There are several exploded technical drawings. I love that kind of thing but sadly, due to space restrictions, a lot of these are very small format so you will need a magnifying glass for close scrutiny!
As well as the technical side of the book it's great to reflect on the different riding styles (compared to modern) of the riers with those skinny tyres, dustbin fairings and puddin' basin lids. Great stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must buy", 14 Sep 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A brilliant compilation of high quality and artistic photographs of the era. Each photo is backed by concise but interesting text as well as each year having a summary and a page showing results.

Highly recommended

If you like this format then "Formula 1 in camera 1970-1979" is just as good.

If you're interested in this era (the 80's) try "The turbo era" by Alan Henry. Excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth tracking down, 14 Sep 2007

I'm glad i bought this book from a marketpace seller as i really enjoyed reading it and perusing the splendid (all colour)photographs.

It is the first book i have read by this author and i like his style of writing. It suits the topic. Not flashy but knowledgeable and interesting. You get the distinct impression that he could easily have doubled the number of pages and not flagged in his depth of knowledge. There were a couple of instances where some photo's of cars being described were absent. Otherwise the photos complement the text well and are of excellent quality.

This era of formula 1 is well worth studying. I can also highly recommend "formula 1 in camera 1980 -1989" I've also found "Renault F1: beyond the yellow teapot" covering just Renault for the same period. Not in the same league as alan henry but worth tracking down.

Thanks to internet-car-books as the copy i received is in absolutely immaculate condition. Flawless.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth adding to your collection, 3 Sep 2007

As on board footage seems so rare on DVD this one is a gem. It is on board footage and nothing else. It has some flaws so be warned. eg: The wind noise almost drowns out other noises on a couple of circuits. The view is always compromised by the left wiper! The good bits make it worthwhile. eg: brands, nurburgring, spa and the sense of outright speed at le mans is jaw dropping. I don't think i'd fancy paying full price however. The marketplace is the best bet for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good little book, 3 Sep 2007

This review is from: Working The Wheel (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this little book. I found it entertaining, insightful and occasionally sad. It brilliantly tells the story of formula 1 racing from a drivers' perspective based around the circuits in the F1 calender at various points in martins' F1 career. Each chapter uses a different circuit. In this way, the book can be read in large chunks or left on the coffee table to be read one chapter at a time. I particularly liked the way martin weaves technical snippets into an otherwise un-technical and candid story. Genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb book, 2 July 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book on the strength of the review by doliver74 and i'm delighted with it. This has to be the best period in formula 1 for sheer innovation and style with some great drivers. In addition to the photographs and captioning there is a brief write up for each year. At the end of each year there is a page showing the teams, drivers and results. Buy and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars nostalgic footage of great drivers and innovative developments in car design., 13 Jun 2007
This review is from: Formula 1 Review: 1978 [DVD] (DVD)
I own several of the DVD'S in this series and find them all intersting viewing. If you're looking for fever pitch excitement look elsewhere. Buy them for nostalgic footage of great drivers and innovative developments in car design. The narration at first seems droll but after a while you may appreciate this as it doesn't intrude and allows you to digest the information and statistics better. The very dry sense of humour occasionally may bring a smile to your face! This particular year was intersting from a car/technological point of view as well as the driver line up of that year. Worth collecting at marketplace prices. Only 4 stars as the excitement level could be higher.
