5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 13 Dec 2013

This is Medieval rock and roll at it's best. 20 tracks of Harry Christopher genius.
All great seasonal tracks, including Gaudete made famous by Steeleye Span and to be honest not much different here, just less accompaniment.
Also track 5 is fantastic and track 6 has the most obvious melody, but for the money you can't go wrong. Shall be playing this at any time of year and a good introduction to Tallis and Byrd.

Brilliant CD. Voice sounds a little like Johnny Cash, but that's no bad thing. Had not heard of them before but will now try the back catalogue.
Atmospheric and moody; personally the best track is 'Straight at the Sun', and the 'Cello'? in 'No Oath, No Spell', 'Go To The Light' should be the theme music to a Western film ... Brilliant.
Buy this before you die, or have 'Ghost Fields' played at your funeral.

Brilliant value for 89p. A bit like the Boards of Canada using 'found' sounds in that way; atmospheric and a bit like one of those paintings with lots of different objects in it, so every time you see it you see something new. Never sounds the same twice, it could be the soundtrack to a walk in the country side; not the usual formulaic stuff.

The Ballad of John Clare
The Ballad of John Clare
by Hugh Lupton
Edition: Paperback
Price: 9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 27 Jan 2013
Given this as a Christmas present, and was unsure about it at first as much of it is fictional, but it is easy to pick out the truth from the invention.
Hugh Lupton is a brilliant storyteller, with a book that is well researched, featuring a troubled year in the life of John Clare; he cleverly weaves into the narrative the disadvantages of the enclosures to the labouring man, and the consequent social upheaval which is beginning to result as the commons disappear, the peasant is dispossessed, and rambling becomes trespassing.
Also the book shows the worry that Napoleon was causing in the lives of ordinary people, the layers of class in village life, the pecking order, and the possible behaviour that could make one an outcast.
Although Lupton also shows how insular rural life was at the beginning of the 19th Century, describing old and lost customs, unwanted pregnancy and murder without the modern scourge of over dramatisation; the book is well written and hugely entertaining, there is no filler, and I didn't want it to end.

No wonder Billy Collins is the USA's best loved poet. No bleeding heart romantic, no metaphysical rubbish, just good poetry, seeing the odd and unusual in everyday experiences! Favourite poems are probably 'Ornithography' and the 'Idea of Natural History at Key West'. Unfortunately only 110 pages long, but worth every penny, am now reading it again. Try 'Horoscopes for the dead' and 'Questions about angels' which are equally as good

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia trip, 12 Jan 2013

1. These arrived within 3 days, so their delivery method is efficient.
2. My wife loves sweets and wherever we go she wants to find an old fashioned sweet shop; now we need look no further. There were Black Jacks, Fruit Salads, Traffic Lights, Parma Violets, Refreshers, and Love Hearts to name but a few.
In fact all the sweets we remembered from our respective childhoods, they were brilliant.
They were a Christmas present which turned out to be more popular on the day than anything else.
3.The retro sweets are a great idea (probably not for your teeth),inexpensive, well packaged and something a bit different especially for those of an age to remember them. They triggered a lot of happy memories. Excellent. All gone now!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bill Bryson on speed!, 24 Dec 2012

Good reportage, probably not in depth enough and a bit fractured in places as his journey does not follow an established pattern. Not laugh out loud, but found myself smiling quite a lot. Unbiased about the native Indian which a lot of US books are not, they seem to thrive on matter of fact racism.
It is a quick read, and gives a good insight into US culture of cars, driving and their paranoia in the cold war.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the CD cover., 24 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Emperors Of Wyoming (Audio CD)
Made the mistake of purchasing this after listening to 30 seconds of each track; it's not bad but none of the tracks seem to say anything meaningful in an intelligent way, and it doesn't grow after a few listens. It is flattered by it's rather good CD cover, and the reference to the first track on the first Neil Young LP in the title.
Best track is easily Pinery Boy, which is not self penned. Still play it though!

These were cheap, and you get what you pay for, but they are serviceable, and do the job. Personally, next time I would probably purchase more expensive ties.

This is like a cross between Coldplay and Killers but better than the sum of their parts, look forward to a full albums worth.
