3.0 out of 5 stars Good Holiday Read, 15 Aug. 2014

Because I know this area of France really well I could envisage all the places mentioned and enjoyed that. I think this was an easy read, ideal for a holiday book and an interesting look back at the unseen disasters that war brings about.

This review is from: Old Filth (Kindle Edition)
I had read a review of Jane Gardams short stories and went to the library to see which of her books were available. I found the Man With The Wooden Hat. From the start I was hooked and reluctant to put the book down. Purchased Old Filth and Have now downloaded the last of the trilogy. it is a fascinating insight into the children of the empire, with a cast of very interesting and believable characters, beautifully written, I will be sad when I finish the last one

3.0 out of 5 stars Memories of childhood, 30 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this a really good and interesting read, it conjured up the era remarkable well. Nevertheless I did have some reservations as to the authors ability to remember so much of her childhood in such details. It could, of course, be that some people do have very much better recall than others. I do not feel that this in any way detracts from a very readable and entertaining book

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into family life, 30 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although it could be said that the family involved is somewhat eccentric this is a beautifully crafted dissection of family life. The mother is a typical chariticature of a certain sort of Irish mother, but believable and sympathetically depicted. I found it difficult to put down and all the characters were convincing and portrayed in depth

At one point I felt I was not going to enjoy this book. As I got into it I became involved and thought it was an excellent plot. I particularly liked the ending

4.0 out of 5 stars Nigeria, 4 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As I lived in Nigeria for a time in 1960/62 so was very keen to see how the author found it now.I lived in Abeokuta and Lagos and had friends in Ibadan. I enjoyed this book, it was very readable and I enjoyed the historical facts some of which I was aware of. I very much doubt I would recognise Lagos now .like the author I have always felt that it is so sad that the country has been badly let down it has such potential.
