2.0 out of 5 stars Not a collection I would have chosen, 15 Jun 2009
This review is from: The Collection (Audio CD)
I have loved Mike Oldfield for many mnay years, in fact Ommadawn rates as one of my favourite albums of all time, with Hergest Ridge and Incantations rating very high also. This 'collection' in my opionion does not summarise an amazing career, It brings to the forefront many of the work of Mike Oldfield that is not his best and most influential, original work. This compiliation simply reinforces to the unknowing audience the 'blue Peter' theme stuff, which seems sadly the music he seems most associated with and not the astonishing early work that is like none other. If you feel this is a way into understanding Mike Oldfield, I think you will be dissapointed, which is a shame as the astonishing work never seems to get much of an airing on the compilation cd's. I'm afraid, Bonnie Tyler singing an average poppy song is poles apart from the Mike Oldfield who created such wonderful early albums. My advise would be, buy the first four albums, ditch these compiliations, perservere and you will NOT be dissapointed. Also a few of the later albums, such as songs of distant earth, TB3, Tres Lunas, light and shade and Music of the spheres are well worth investing in. Do that instead would be my advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album, 15 Sep 2007
Stumbled upon vast whilst searching for other things, write ups sounded good, thought i would take a flyer and order it. It arrived and it is all i played for about three days, this album has everything. I suppose it helps being a NIN fan as i am, as there is a lot of NIN sounded stuff on this album, particulary the slower sounding Trent Reznor type tracks as well as the harder sounding influences. I have since ordered the other vast albums, however i suspect they wont be as good as this one, as this is an amazing album. I love all the tracks, however, the tribal sounds on Dirty Hole work so well and compliments the heavier nature of the song wonderfully. This song comes in a wave after hearing the superb Touched in all its emtional guises. Then into Pretty when you cry, again a brilliant song.

Quite simply, buy this album, I have, and would place it in a reasonably short list of my favourite albums ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars great album, 3 July 2007
This review is from: Effloresce (Audio CD)
oceansize are a great band, mixing heavy riffs with melodic sounds superbly with an extremely unique sound. This album is so worth a listen if you are interested in very well constructed, well written music with a distinctive take.

A few influnences, main of which i would say is the genius of Cardiacs, however, not suprising as Tim Smith of Cardiacs was once very involved with Oceansize.

Have a listen, you will be pleased you did.
