To Be Or Not To Be [1983] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Mel Brooks
Price: £5.76

5.0 out of 5 stars Mel Brooks and his merry band of Polish Thespians outwit the evil Nazis in "To Be or Not To Be"., 13 Aug 2014
A group of Polish actors in a theater in Warsaw in wartime Poland strive to escape from the invading Germans and make their way to England which is still holding out. Mel Brooks is in typically zany form and with Anne Bancroft (who is actually Polish) lead the troupe on a hilarious merry-go-round to try to escape the "Nasty Nazis".

5.0 out of 5 stars "Jack Strong". Poland's First Nato Soldier., 13 Aug 2014
The story of Colonel Kuklinski a.k.a. "Jack Strong", the person who provided the West with information on the Communist crackdown and imposition of Martial Law in Poland 1981 is incredibly true.

Jack Strong is arguably Poland's first Nato officer. In 1980 he began passing information regarding the Warsaw-Pact to the CIA. The story of Kuklinski has been known for many years by Poles and this Polish language feature film is a decent effort by the Polish film industry to take a leaf out of Hollywood's book and turn out a feature film of this Poles' incredible exploits.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1984, and Doublespeak In 2014., 12 Aug 2014
This review is from: 1984 [DVD] (DVD)
Bleak and downbeat vision of the future. Orwell's vision has been correct in regard to many aspects regarding the state attempting to control the individual and the presentation of information.

The film is based on Orwell's excellent book and goes well with "Animal Farm" which has a similar theme of warning of the dangers of totalitarianism.

Zegota: The Council for Aid to Jews in Occupied Poland 1942-45
Zegota: The Council for Aid to Jews in Occupied Poland 1942-45
by Irene Tomaszewski
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £24.02

5.0 out of 5 stars Zegota. The Polish AK's organisation to rescue Jews in German Occupied Poland., 12 Aug 2014
Zegota is the little known, and much ignored Polish organisation set up by the Polish resistance, the AK and the Polish-Government-in-Exile to rescue Jews from the Germans.

This organisation should be much better known given the thousands of Jews it saved, the number of Poles involved in the rescue and the horrendous risks they took.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Battle for Warsaw in "Miasto (City) 44"., 12 Aug 2014
This review is from: Miasto 44 (Paperback)
This is the Polish language book of the Polish feature film "Miasto 44" to be released in September 2014. It is a fictional account of a teenage couple meeting during the German occupation of Poland and entering the ranks of the "Conspiracy" - the Polish Resistance.

The story reminds me a little of "Kamienie na Szaniec - Stones for the Rampart" - the story of Polish youths in the precarious peacetime before WW2 and their baptism of fire after joining the Resistance in the battle against the German occupiers.

"Stones for the Rampart" is a true story written by a member of the resistance who knew the people he described in his work, while Miasto 44 involves fictional characters in a love story which takes place around real events. Both have similarities in that they deal with idealistic youth meeting the nightmarish scenarios of war on the battlefield.

There is the same theme of innocence, duty, honour and consequence. Miasto 44 is further a love story which takes place before and during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

German Camps,Polish Victims: The BBC coverage of German-occupied Poland
German Camps,Polish Victims: The BBC coverage of German-occupied Poland
Price: £2.05

5.0 out of 5 stars English Language Version. German Camps, Polish Victims., 19 Jun 2014
The BBC has outdone its previous stance on Polish WW2 issues. Not only did it broadcast a full version of the German program "Generation War" with its distortions of WW2 realities, it completed failed to mention that it was the Poles that captured Monte Cassino when there was the recent memorial service. In fact no mention was made of the battle at all. The BBC ran a piece about the architecture of the monastery instead of making any mention of the intense fighting which might have meant mentioning the Polish contribution.

Days of Honor / Czas honoru --- Season 2 (BOX 4 DVD)
Dvd ~ Piotr Adamczyk
Offered by imported-dvdreams
Price: £26.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to the First Season of "Days of Honour"., 11 Jun 2014
This is a great series for anyone who is interested in WW2 action. Although a Polish language series it has English subtitles, a large budget and great actors. Typical of these succesful series it has a mix of good characters, authentic locations, several plots running, intrigue and action.

The stories follow the Polish resistance in wartime Warsaw as they attempt to get information out of the occupying Germans and build up a larger resistance network. They are up against the Gestapo and a German Military Intelligence Abhwer officer who recruit criminals and coerce others to work for them in trying to infiltrate the Resistance. Additionally the esapees from the Ghetto are up against blackmailers inside and outside willing to profit from their precarious situation.

Loking forward to seeing Series 3 from TVP.

The Winslow Boy [DVD] [1999]
Dvd ~ Rebecca Pidgeon
Price: £5.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous Film., 7 Jun 2014
This review is from: The Winslow Boy [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
This is a real gem of a film. I came across it by accident. The story takes place at the beginning of the 20th century. The period feel captures some of the character of Edwardian England in the years before 1914.

This is a great story of a wrong that needed to be righted and the machinations that had to take place for that to happen and the strains that this placed on a family that sought to clear the son's name.

The Polish language film Run Boy Run premiered in Poland earlier this year (2014) and is based on this book by Uri Orlev.

As a young child Uri escaped by chance from the Warsaw Ghetto with the aid of a Polish wagon owner and spent the war scavenging and hiding in villages and the Polish countryside. Luckily with some occasional help he saw through the occupation - just.
