Simple worker-placement mechanisms hide a deep and profoundly satisfying game, satisfaction that partly comes from the totally integrated theme that really makes you feel like you are building and growing a life on a 17th century subsistence farm.

Excellent, fine quality presentation, a perfect balance of the abstract and the more concrete.

Fun beat 'em up. Nothing revolutionary, but a good, quick, enjoyable filler. A nicely produced game, although dice could be better.

More induction than deduction, Tobago sees you narrowing down potential treasure sites via players deciding where the treasure can and cannot be. Then the race is on to dig it up! It's fun and the sharing of treasure is always tense, especially so if you shuffle the dreaded curse cards back in to the deck. A beautiful production which is both easy to learn and easy to play.

From the box, to the rules, to the components, everything in this game is beautifully produced. Simple resource management mechanisms, simple combat, the race and, of course, treasure hunting, all combine to create a fine game.

Great, fun game. Interesting mechanisms, superb, amusing art and a far heavier weight than its cutesy theme would have you believe.

So, great game, lousy packaging (game not Amazon). The packaging/insert is so poor that I had to return the game to Amazon as the punch card had popped many pieces (punch card not shrink-wrapped like in Ghost Stories, say), resulting in token damage, plus the player boards were bumped and frayed from continual rattling around in the box as they have no specific home, unlike in Tobago or Jamaica, for example. Many games, Tobago an Jamaica amongst them, have inserts specifically designed for that game, inserts that keep everything in place and secure. It seems that more and more games, especially those made in China (Tobago and Jamaica made in Germany), are coming with the simplest of cardboard dividers, dividers that just aren't up to the job.

Anyway, should the 'Dungeon Petz' you receive be damaged, my advice would be to get Amazon to send you another and, if necessary, another. At this sort of price it is wrong to accept a game that is anything less than perfect. Ordinarily, I would suggest you contact the publisher, in this case, Zman, but I tried that and have heard nothing for three weeks now. I guess it's cheaper to replace individual components than producing a viable, plastic insert. Maybe if enough games are refused, publishers will reconsider their feeble approach to packaging.

I cannot recommend this game highly enough. True, I do like cooperative games, but this one, this beautifully balanced, beautifully illustrated stonker beats all others I have tried (although I have yet to play Pandemic).

Initially there's a fair bit to remember, although the actual gameplay is easy to understand. Don't be deceived though as this game is far from easy to beat! Even at it's initiation level it's actually pretty damn hard! However, don't let this put you off; after all, who would want a co-op game that was easy to beat? And as I said before, it plays so beautifully, with everything, every check and every balance making perfect sense that even when you lose, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Excellent.
