A wonderful book. I particularly like Edith Dombey whose struggle feels extraordinarily contemporary. Melodrama of course, as one expects from Dickens, but also a great outpouring of wisdom, understanding and rage. Florence is a bit irritating, but the picture of perfect love between her and Walter appears real, just as a dream or longing feels real.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully assured historical fiction, 15 Oct. 2013

This review is from: Salvation (Kindle Edition)
Salvation is a beautifully assured piece of historical fiction. There is a powerful sense of both place and period, and the strong narrative takes us from the great country houses of the South West to the turbulent back streets and playhouses of 16th century London. There's even a role for Shakespeare. This may be romance, but Steele doesn't baulk at the cruelties of the age. The central love story is deftly woven into the political and religious dramas of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, culminating in the great sea battle between the English and the Spanish Armada.

Radio Congo: Signals of Hope from Africa's Deadliest War

5.0 out of 5 stars The Heart of Congo, 23 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Radio Congo is, ostensibly, an account the writer's trip along the shores and waters of Lake Tanganyika. But it is much more than a travel book. Ben Rawlence, a senior researcher with Human Rights Watch, has a deep knowledge and understanding of African history. A fluent Swahili speaker, his journey takes us to the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its resilient people. Colonialism, war, and their aftermath, are prevailing themes, but Radio Congo is no catalogue of horrors. The great strength of the book is the way in which it allows the people to tell their own story and to engage us in the sounds, sights, smells and tastes of their hot, damaged and deeply exploited country.
