2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea for a novel, 20 Dec. 2014
Oh Dear...Good idea for a novel, but sadly, badly written...very amateurish & I'm very surprised it was published.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring...zzz, 6 Aug. 2014
His books are usually fast paced page turners; but this one was frankly boring, repetitive, with far too much inner discourse of main character. Very surprising considering his other work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as Hawkquest!, 21 April 2014

Loved Hawkquest & am finding this sequel just as entertaining. 1am, & I'm still reading it; wake at 6 or 7am & have to read more! Will hate to finish it! Just love the combination of historical research & rich imagination; takes me beyond this world & into realms unknown!
No need to detail storyline/ plot...all here from other subscribers; just hoping to give an impression of how I enjoyed the book. Many thanks Robert Lyndon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed., 30 Mar. 2013
Thought it about time to read one of his books & picked up this one for 50p. second-hand. Quite frankly, really don't understand why his books get into top ten bestsellers.

Half way through & plodding on; but finding his writing is very wooden & frankly boring!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from beginning to end!, 2 Dec. 2012

This review is from: Ireland: A Novel (Paperback)
I just loved this book. I read it in a day, whilst in bed, suffering from severe back pain. It took the edge off the pain & gave me something highly enjoyable to concentrate on! This would appeal to a lot of readers of varying ages...from teens to 'oldies.' As well as affording me much insight to Ireland - in terms of its' geography, history & mythology; all these factors were presented within a gripping fictional storyline. I would compare it to a big, beefy pudding: layers upon layers of varying textures & tastes. A delicious & very clever book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of his best!, 1 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read all of R J Ellory's books, & for me, this latest was a total let down (compared with his others.)I enjoyed the story line/ plot throughout & thought the characters & dialogue strong. However, the continuous retrospective element of the main protaganist (which accounted for at least a quarter of the book,) was laborious & tedious to say the least!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, well written book., 1 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Yellow Birds (Hardcover)
Plenty of descriptive reviews here. so unnecessary to detail further. This is a harrowing & powerful tale & it's obvious from reading that the author is well acquainted with the story matter.
A well deserved 'Guardian First Book of 2012' accolade!
