5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and exciting, 14 Nov 2013
This is an amazing collection of Early Soviet children's book illustrations in the very few years of Bolshevism (1920-1935)when a new society was to be built from scratch. It was a time which was marked by great optimism and idealism and a time when artists wanted to be part of this great new ideology.

Chukovsky set up a publishers called 'Raduga' (rainbow) and he and Marshak attracted prominent avant-garde writers, artists and designers to 'Raduga', including pioneers of constructivism, suprematism and futurism. The group included the poet Osip Mandelstam, the constructivist playwright Sergei Tretyakov, Vladimir Mayakovsky and Daniil Kharms.

Artists and writers were charged with producing a children's literature based on the real world: workers, industry, technology, transport, food, everyday objects, animals and buildings and they did this with an exuberant inventiveness and lyricism. Philosophy, pragmatism, good citizenship and science are conveyed with such beauty and are so aesthetically pleasing that it is amazing to think that in a story about electricity: M Makhalov's photomontaged illustrations in 'The Journey Inside the Electric Lamp', could be so cinematic and filled with such high drama and adventure. Many of the illustrations use spare, bold geometric shapes with the muted primary colours of constructivism and these dance alongside stories and rhymes about Soviet Life. The printing technology and palette of colours is very specific to the way that the images are constructed. This is a fantastic source book, a book that I will return to for inspiration again and again and one that any one interested in illustration, printmaking, graphics or typography should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, 4 Nov 2012
This review is from: Cinderelephant (Hardcover)
This is a very readable book with great illustrations and even though we have only just bought it, it's already a firm favourite. Good illustrations in a book really make the difference for me between a book that I enjoy as an adult and a book that I read as a parent: The illustrations have a silk-screen like feel to the layers of colour but with a lovely graphic line which make them a pleasure to look at and the large format of the book really suits the story. This is a modern day fairy story with a difference- in this book, the shoe is too BIG for any one but Cinderelephant to wear. The combination of colour, glittery pink shoes, a stretch limo and glitter ball at the ball gives this book the glamour that a fairy story about two people falling in love should have but also comes with a healthy sense of humour (Cinderelephant cycling home at midnight with only one shoe on!): this a very funny and lovely book and comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, reliable Clock, 28 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this clock to replace the identical one that had worked beautifully for at least 3 years until I dropped it (when putting the clock forwards for spring time)and then it wasn't broken completely....just rather slow. This is battery run (AA I think...but normal batteries, not expensive or hard to get ones), easy to change the time by turning a very accessible dial on the back and hangs on the wall from an integrated hole that you can hook it over a screw (or nail if you are lazy). You can see the numbers clearly (good for adults and kids!) and there is a useful second hand. The size is good for a wall clock (not too large or too small) and it hangs in our kitchen so we can see it clearly and get out the house on time. I have never noticed it having an annoying tick, but then again it is in a busy room. I was delighted that this design was still available as I really liked my old one and wanted an identical replacement clock. I like that the metal surround is matte and not shiny silver and that the face is a nice fresh white colour and I like the choice of font for the numbers.

5.0 out of 5 stars a comfy and versatile shoe!, 26 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sizing (size 40) is accurate and because of the adjustable velcro cross-over strap they fit like a glove even though I have quite wide feet whereas my friend who also has a pair has far narrower feet! The leather is very soft and with a lovely grain to it and the navy looks great with blue or black as it is quite a dark navy blue. I wore these shoes all day walking around London and they were comfy all day and I don't usually find anything with a heel comfy. These shoes look great with dresses and skirts and don't look to heavy nor too mary jane girly. They look dressy enough to go out somewhere smart but not so smart that you can't also wear them during the day. An amazingly comfy, versatile shoe...that's a rare thing for me to say about any shoe!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bourne Identity for kids., 24 Aug 2010

This review is from: Jimmy Coates: Revenge (Paperback)
Bought this for my 11 year old (year 6) son who is an avid reader and who had just reached the end of the Artemis Fowl books available and wanted something 'like the Bourne Identity film but for kids' with a hero that is not an adult (ie someone he can relate to)He had also enjoyed the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz which has a similar level of being a thriller but not too dark. I haven't read it myself of course, but he has loved it and is enjoying the whole series, can't put them down!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read., 24 Aug 2010

This is different from the film in many ways but was a fun read on holiday for my 9 year old who liked the Harry Potter books very much and had just finished the last book in that series and was looking for a new series to enjoy. There is action in Percy Jackson and the book is very American in its vernacular and references but sometimes the pace of the book felt a bit slow and the plot a bit formulaic when I read out bits at bed time. If you are looking for an easy, not too deep book that will pass the time of day pleasantly this is for you. If you are looking for something with more complexity or depth (like Harry Potter/ Roman Mysteries) then this will probably be a bit simplistic. My son reckoned that he would like to read another in the series but hasn't pressed me and we have been reading the Nurse Mathilda/ Nanny Mcphee books instead!!

I had high hopes for this but it isn't as moving or as soulful as I thought it was going to be. I bought this album on the strength of the choice of songs , all of which I love, from Dido's lament to Cry Me a River but I haven't listened to this cd that much since buying it as I find the arrangements unsatisfying and superficial despite the intelligence and depth described by other reviewers. Like all things, it comes down to personal taste. For instance, for unconventional renditions of songs, Dido's Lament by Jeff Buckley is the most poignant and heart felt I have heard from a non classically trained singer and Ella Fitzgerald sings Cry Me a River and makes me feel that she really knows what she is singing about.

This is a fantastic book. Apparently a description of the every days of a post man. Visually the book explores the vernacular of place and the particular of experience marrying as it does the visual with the narrative. Few books capture this specificity through text and image making this book Book Art in my eyes: a beautiful object that absorbs the reader visually and viscerally (through text). I love that it is not a novel, not a picture book, not a list or coffee table book rather a landscape. Buy this book and enjoy it.

Went for digital and it is brilliant. You can buy a piece of track that joins digital to the old 1970s track (which we have a loft full of)too making this very flexible. Since buying this track we have also bought a jump too which I would also recommend. This is great fun, requires some skill and with the overtaking on the cross over track bit is more fun that just trailing around the track after each other. Bought for 9 and 11 year old for Chrismas and played with a lot.

It's as big as you would imagine it to be, so we leave it out since putting it out and in is a bit boring, but not tricky. The cars are apparently very 'cool'. Highly recommend if your kids like cars and racing!!

Heard this on Radio 4 and laughed a lot. A pastiche of Dickens and all Victoriana, lamentable deaths and plucky heroines, the evil Mr. Benevolent and the invention of the bin...utterly absurd and beautifully put together, perfect to listen to on long train journeys.
