5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book by a remarkable woman, 20 Oct. 2012
This is a wonderful book, tracing the life of an extraordinary and inspirational woman. From her childhood and early days, she leads us on to her sometimes arduous war time experiences, travelling throughout the middle eastern theatre of war performing for the troops with a small orchestra, and becoming a WW2 forces sweetheart. Then follows her post war career as an opera singer, working with major figures of the mid 20th century music scene such as Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and others. She went on to found a notable travelling opera company in the 1950s, The London Opera Players, which she indefatigably ran for 56 years, taking opera to people that would otherwise not have had the chance to experience performances of such a high standard. The opera company also launched many a career, giving aspiring performers their first break as professional artists. As if all this were not enough, she also tells of her experiences as a global traveller and mountaineer, about which she gave many an illustrated lecture. Her love of life shines through in this book as does her kind, generous nature and remarkable determination. A fine read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a veritable goldmine of information., 13 Jun. 2011
This is a first class book. If the thought of travelling overland with a vehicle has crossed your mind, or even if you are a seasoned traveller (see ZenSlo's comments) this is essential and comprehensive reading. Written with first hand knowledge and a sense of humour, Overlanders Handbook contains valuable advise and info on all aspects of overland travel, ranging from the selection of a suitable vehicle, equipment, trip planning and preparation onwards, it also includes first hand reports from a selection of folk who have made their "journey of a lifetime" dream a reality. Buy this book, you'll be glad that you did.
