Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to The antiquities of Rome, 28 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book in advance of a week in Rome (not my first visit to the city) and found it invaluable. This is a detailed guide purely focused on Roman era monuments and so should not be viewed as a general guide to the city. For anyone with a more specialist interest in the monuments wishing to find out more and to see them in a new light it is however excellent. It covers not only the more obvious sites such as the Forum and Colosseum but also many lesser known remains. Above all I found it fascinating to discover roman buildings and elements which had been reused in later buildings such as medieval or baroque churches. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to have more than a superficial understanding of what they are eyeing when visiting Rome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly global perspective on history, 28 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been reading this book as a companion to a world history course on Coursera and find it to be a very readable though academic book with a good global rather than Eurocentric perspective on history. Above all it highlights how the different parts of the global interlinked and impacted one another even in the medieval era. Definitely a worthwhile read for someone looking at an introduction to world history. Obviously with the amount of ground the book sets out to cover it can only manage to highlight certain points and introduce concepts and ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful guide for short visit, 28 Feb 2013

I was in Tokyo on business with a couple of free days and this is a useful pocket-sized guide to get you around and give you an indication of the major sights. It is probably not suficient for someone who plans to spend a longer period of time in Tokyo. The information in the guide was accurate and up-to-date.
