Almost a great game., 2 Dec 2004
So Half Life 2 is *finally* upon us and I, like much of the gaming world, couldn't wait to get back into the world of Gordon Freeman and play the game that we've been getting tantalising glimpses of for the last year or so. Now let me put my anticipation of this game into perspective...knowing that my current PC wasn't going to run in it in anywhere near the way it should be played I actually bought a new one, sure i'll be using it for other stuff too...but HL2's impending release actually made me go out and buy a top of the range PC...I wanted to play it *that* much!
So I got the game and, like everyone else, was subjected to the most torturous install process I have *ever* had to endure (why on earth all the install files can't be on the dvd I don't know), coupled with the fact that I was forced to install some Valve branded spyware (Steam) that I didn't want on my system, and guess what...it didn't work...I asked the 'support' people at Valve about my problem but, as yet, haven't received a reply. A week later I read somewhere that this game doesn't like DVD burners (god knows why) so went out and bought *another* DVD drive...and it worked...and I was happy...until now, 8 days later, and it's all over...the game's finished, and I can't help thinking "is that it!"
So was it worth the wait? Well i'd have to say no...idiotic marketing choices like Steam, stupid install processes, random incompatibility problems, useless support and not nearly enough game have ruined the whole thing for me...sure what there is of it is undoubtedly amazing, but it's just over too quickly...maybe if they get some expansion packs out that quadruple the playing time *then* it'll be worth playing...but not yet.
Disappointed to not even begin to cover how I feel!
