4.0 out of 5 stars Follow Up To XXX, Keeps Up The High Quality., 14 April 2014

This review is from: Gravitas (Audio CD)
Another year and the 4th Album by the classic line up featuring the quality songwriting of John Wetton and Geoff Downes. A new guitarist is featured his a young man of 27 by the name of Sam Coulson. Completing the line up is the other original member Carl Palmer. Good songs throughout with the emphasis on strong melodies and quality singing and playing by the 4 members. Its soft rock with occasional heavy and harder hitting sections on some songs. The 3 ballads being very memorable with the haunting "Russian Dolls" being the very best. I love title track which features a wonderful extended intro featuring strings and piano before the full band come in. It has an infectious chorus. The guitar work by Sam Coulson is fine but would like to hear a wider range of styles by him. Hard Rock, Soft Rock and Acoustic guitar would be great with an extended solo. So its 8 tracks of a really varied range played and sang to a really high standard with excellent songwriting. Only the Album's closing track lets the rest down. It sounds forced and lacks the natural flow that all the other songs have. Of the 7 Albums featuring Wetton/Downes/Palmer this Album is softer than the first and Astra but rockier than Pheonix. Its a better Album than Astra with a better natural feel. Of the last 4 Albums its most similar to Omega in style. A bit stripped down soundwise from XXX.
The Album is recommended if you enjoy bands like the Moody Blues "70'S Stuff. Pink Floyd , Keane and Coldplay also spring to mind with a bit of Van Halen thrown in for good measure with the guitar style of Sam Coulson. Mostly its a good quality Album called Gravitas that has the ASIA stamp on it. Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DAB Tuner at under half price., 26 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking for a good quality HIFI DAB Tuner to replace an aging FM Tuner and found this model on the SUPERFI website but to purchase through Amazon. At well under the half the £250 RRP its a steal.
My FM tuner was fine in daylight hours but evenings were often a different matter. Radio 2 was always very hissy with reception worse in foggy or windy conditions. Classic FM suffered the same fate with evening listening. The biggest disappointment was my local Radio Station Radio Cambridgeshire which I often listen to for evening football commentary. I had considered spending a small fortune on upgrading and getting a roof aerial installed. too expensive.
Having purchased this I was a little nervous about how DAB would sound in terms of quality and interference. I need not have worried the sound Quality is excellent on all the radio stations in the evening after dark. It delivers a full rich sound with the right level of bass and treble clarity. Its also great to listen too radio stations such as Gold that I could not receive before, in rich quality.
If there is downside it does include a cheap basic remote control. The other is the number of radio stations that can be stored is just 10 but these are small gripes.
If you are looking for a quality DAB HIFI Tuner then this SANSUI DR201 DAB TUNER could be ideal and its much better value than other DAB tuners priced at over £300.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cable., 9 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this not expecting great things but was totally wrong.
having spent £30 from a well known hifi store that sells HDMI cables, i didnt expect much. the £30 Cable i got from the hifi store was an improvement on the free cable with my panasonic blu-ray but not a huge improvement. This Betron cable is a huge improvement. I watched old dvd,s of early Poirot much of the snowyness has gone with the colours being more realistic and vibrant. the snowyness wont entirely go but it will be much improved. Crocodile Dundee was the same with huge improvement expecially in the darkened night time scenes. Finally i tried a Dvd of a series called Crime Travellor with the same stunning results. If you are looking for a HDMI cable thats significantly upscales older Dvds to a high standard then this Betron is excellent value at £3.99. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be warned the discs will only play on multi region players, 7 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have given this 4 stars for the quality of the programmes on this series one Poirot release. Don't make the mistake of buying this US region A Blu-ray release if your player only plays European code B Blu-ray discs. I made the mistake of thinking my Panasonic Blu-ray player accepts all discs including US code A releases. Unfortunately it does not.
It is well worth joining the Spanish Amazon site and do a search for Poirot on Blu-ray. I did this and found series 1 through to 11 on Europe A Blu-ray.With postage and packaging the cost is about £19 for each series. I have ordered the first two series and await their arrival with anticipation.
finally it would be well worth ITV releasing all Poirot series for UK release but in the meantime buy from Amazon Spain.

2.0 out of 5 stars excellent film but dreadful picture quality, 24 Oct. 2013
Family Plot was a wonderful final release with the masterful director Alfred Hitchcock. It is full of suspense but has lots of dark humour. a wonderful fitting finale. Unfortunately the Blu-ray copy is dreadful. The picture is snowy expecially the nightime scenes and scenes with subdued lighting such as the séance scenes. some of the scenes are blurred as well. its a great shame that the poor visual quality ruins an excellent film. Universal need to work to rectify all the visual faults and rerelease the film in the quality that the film deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars underated gems, 24 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Rough Diamonds (Audio CD)
I have never understood why this album has had so much negative comments from the music press and some fans of the band.
From Electric Land right through to Racetrack that closes the album there are 10 really strong songs. Rough Diamonds is not as hard rocking as the first to albums but the quality of the songs are really strong and are a great listen.
Listen to songs such as Painted Face and Downhill Ryder with great melodies and lyrics and doubters will be surprised by the depth and quality here.
The band,s playing and Paul Rodgers singing is excellent right through.
Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars storming live performance, 21 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent double cd and single dvd performance. a good mix of new and older songs from the 4 original members. This is likely to be the last official recording featuring the excellent guitar playing of Steve Howe as he has now quit the band. he wants to concentrate on Yes and his jazz trio. Good luck to him and he will be missed. when he quit after the Alpha album in 1984 the band went on to record the Astra album without him, which was a tired sounding effort and lacking the vibrancy of the first 2 albums. I hope i,m wrong but i fear Steve Howe leaving will leave a huge void. So enjoy this live performance of the 4 originals in sparkling form. good luck to Asia in 2013 with Sam Coulson joining the band.

4.0 out of 5 stars xxxx ASIA, 16 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Xxx [Limited Cd+dvd] (Audio CD)
Three Albums released by the reformed original line up. Didnt ever expect to see the real Asia ever reform or to release 3 really strong Abums together.
XXX is a classy mix of classic Asia melodic stadium rock. The deluxe edition is the one to get as it includes 2 versions of I Know How You Feel, the funkier version on the 9 track release, featuring a wonderful catchy keyboard sound and lovely vocals by John Wetton. the midnight mix is just wonderful, so haunting and beautiful. other highlights are Bury Me In Willow which is a lovely power ballad. the rocking Tomorow The World is very catchy and a really good way to kick of the Album. Ghost of A Chance is also a big highlight starts very softly and ends in rousing style.
All in all a really strong follow up to Omega but doesent quite top Omega for excellence as that album has at least 10 really good songs.
Lets hope Asia can stay together to release one more Album as good as these last 3. Buy all 3 and enjoy top musicians at the top of their game.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUSIC THAT FLOWS, 30 May 2012

This review is from: Bodies And Minds (Audio CD)
This is my first purchase of a Great Lake Swimmers Album. This is the bands second release after the self titled debut in 2003. To my ears judging by the previews of the first release a huge step in the right direction.
From the very first song a beautiful tender ballad called Song for the Angels the bar is set high. Not a single filler song. Tony Dekker has a rich soulful voice that sends a shiver down the spine on the slower songs and it really adds so much to the accoustic americana that is the style of most of the songs here. this is a good album to start with if accoustic Neil Young and R.E.M of the early ninety,s is to the listeners taste but with a sound relevent to today.
With each release the band develops its style to a fuller sound but loses none of the sensitive quality of this release of high quality accoustic americana.
Start with this Album and buy the 3 later releases in order as i intend to do and i'm sure you will be rewarded with the high quality of this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catie is on Fire, 3 Jan. 2012

Having read the 2 fans reviews on Amazon of this new Catie Curtis Album,I had some doubts about buying it. This new collection of 10 new original songs is excellent and possibly her best yet.much of the Album is gentle and reflective in style.the superb River Wide is a wonderful stripped down ballad with just piano and Caties haunting vocals. After Hours is a gentle and moody at the same time. Seeds and Tears is a lovely ballad to finish the Album.
The thing that really impresses most is the quality of the songwriting here. The Album also has some wonderful upbeat songs. Another Day on Earth is brilliant with a wonderful catchy courus. Highway Del Sol is also very catchy and a good singalong. I Do is very folkie in style with a catchy singalong feel. the song avoids being too sentimental due to catchy vibe.
The only downside is at only 34 minutes the cd is too short but its filled with excellent Folk/Pop songs so is a great buy for anyone looking for some quality singing and playing. Is highly recommended.
