1.0 out of 5 stars No gold star for spelling, 6 Dec 2013
The illustration doesn't sell it given it has a spelling mistake. Better designs are available, unfortunately from America with huge p+p charges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the amazon review, 2 May 2012
This review is from: Dune [Blu-ray] [1984] (Blu-ray)
Rather difficult to rate something before it's been released, but it looks like this will be an update of the blu-ray release of some years ago, but with a few extras.

Note that the amazon review has NOTHING to do with this upcoming release, which is the Lynch version. There is no mechanism to challenge these mistakes. Already tried the customer service which addresses anything but the point you try to make.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not all the singles versions, 20 Feb 2012
This review is from: The Singles Collection (Audio CD)
I've heard the samples of this CD on Amazon.DE and can confirm that these are NOT all singles versions. Certainly "Stay With Me" is a later L.P. version. So, this is not what is says it is.
Yet another disappointment with regard to Blue Mink on CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing, but not much, 7 Jan 2012
The best I can say of this release is that at least if you don't have a vinyl copy you can hear what a fairly rough copy sounds like until EMI Liberty get round to releasing an affordable copy.

I paid less than £3 and wouldn't pay more as the source is a pretty ropey vinyl copy with lots of distortion on Julie's vocal. The mastering is pretty slapdash as well with tracks suddenly cut before a fade etc. Hallmark always did have a cheap and budget-level reputation and this does them no favours.

As for the music, it's not one of Julie London's best. It veers between swing and rock'n'roll and really doesn't suit the "torch" nuances that London employed on earlier albums.

A shelf-filler until a better copy comes along.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful if you want extricate yourself, 27 Dec 2011
Two years after trying to cancel my subscription I am still getting automated messages to say my subscription is about to expire. Contact their customer service and you'll get copy-and-paste automated replies cleverly worded so you think you've resolved the situation when, in fact, you haven't.

As for the software, I found it very hard to navigate around and set up controls for what I wanted. It also didn't managed to catch a virus that shut my p.c. down at registry level that need a complete wipe and re-install to get back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite to the highest standard, 14 Nov 2011
This review is from: 8 Classics (Audio CD)
I can see why amazon put this on hold for a while after someone had objected to it being not as described. Whilst one can argue with that I can offer a reason.
The albums might have been enhanced digitally, but from what source? The first two albums (on the first CD) are from vinyl copies. You can hear the imperfections, clicks and odd scratch or distortion that the digital filters didn't bury under a muddy, bassy sound. EMI Liberty have released better copies from the original master tapes. However, the rest of the albums don't seem to suffer in quality as much. Sparse information on the sleeve, notably no copyrights given, but if what you're after is a sometimes cheap way of hearing this superb torch singer in her prime it could be a good start.
So, as an introduction to the smoky 1950s Julie London it was very good value at £8.99, though not so much at the £26+ it's subsequently shot up to. There are obviously a lot of companies trying to release Julie London material - often the same stuff. Would that EMI Liberty continued to release the rest of the 1960s albums that go for silly money in Japan....

4.0 out of 5 stars Ripe for a special edition, 16 Mar 2010
This review is from: Wilde [1997] [DVD] (DVD)
Not much more can be said on the content and performances of the film, but I might add a note that the currently available edition claims to have a 5.1 surround soundtrack which is incorrect. It's just 2.0. rather disappointingly.

I look forward to a good Blu-ray edition with a 5.1 remastered soundtrack, commentary and more extras.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where are the extras?, 9 Mar 2010
Very hard to determine from the reviews attached to this Blu-Ray edition what extras there are as the reviews often come from the DVD version.
It seems from a letter in DW Magazine that it's very light on extras and commentaries. So have BBC Worldwide/2 Entertain learned nothing from the bland releases of the early DVDs and are they repeating the same mistake with Blu-ray? Maybe some years down the line we'll get "new" editions like we're now going to get with those early DVD releases (Talons, Androzani etc,).
So unless someone can convince me it's worth the money (and I DO like all the stories), I'll hold off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong picture, 21 April 2009
This is illustrated with the wrong picture and is very misleading. Natures Aid tablets are vegan. Swanson tablets (which are the ones provided) are not.
