The Goonies Blu-Ray Boxset (US Import), 2 July 2011
First of all, this Blu-Ray is region free, so it will play on UK Blu-Ray players/PS3.
The Goonies is my favourite childhood movie, I've seen it countless times, on TV, VHS, DVD, at the cinema and now on Blu-Ray. I'm a huge fan and would buy any re-issue, any format, just to own it. I bought the Blu-Ray pretty much just for the extras included in the box set - I wasn't even sure I'd be able to watch the film on our PS3. Luckily I could and although I'm no technical expert, was surprised by the difference I could notice in the picture quality. Colours are brighter, blacks are blacker, the film looks richer and much crisper. The special features are the same as on the DVD release. There's nothing extra except a nicer menu, but the DVD special features were already fantastic and pretty much all-inclusive. It's well worth going for the Blu-Ray over the DVD if (for some inconceivable reason) you don't own the film already.
The box itself is, dare I say...beautiful! It has an all-over print which is metallic and textured with nice little shiny embellishments dotted about. A very special treatment and about as far away from the bargain basment DVD releases as you could get. The only way I can fault it would be to say that a magnetic closer would have been nice, to stop the fold over bit flapping open.
Onto those deal-making extras....
The board game - what a great inclusion! It's a fun play through, not too short and can get pretty cut-throat at times! It's not overtly goonies/pirate-themed... would have been nice to have some trivia based aspect, but it's quite nice quality and like I said, good fun.
The storyboard cards are a bit pointless, but again nice glossy quality and as a self-confessed goonies geek, I'm happy to own any little piece of goonies-related ephemera. They come in a cute treasure map envelope too!
The souvenier promo magazine reproduction is 80s-tastic and the Empire 20th anniversary booklet is nice too.
I would strongly recommend buying this boxset!
