Price: 49.15

5.0 out of 5 stars value for money, 24 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent and unique overview of an issue that gets far too little attention - salinity. The author can tap into many decades of insights and research. Very valuable for all interested in agriculture and land management in South Asia.

2.0 out of 5 stars Exercise in misleading, 24 Jun 2013
with the prism scandal in full bloom this book is an awful exercise in deceit. no mention of all email being shifted, screened and categorized - only the suggestion that there was this risk ten years ago that security industry would try to get accesss to it. we know better now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Important story, 10 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This books tells a very important story - the depletion of many global resources. Its strength is the large number of issues and examples it brings together - not only oil/gas but also minerals, commodities and land. Where the book is relatively weak is in the quantitative overviews. But a very important book nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars must read for everybody in environment!, 29 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is an amazing book - the way it is written and the content it conveys. if there were 6 or 7 start rankings the book would deserve more than five stars.

for everybody interested in how china manages its environment - often impressive (the reforestation) but often also frightening (the south north waters, the multitude of dams) or amazing (the breeding of pandas) this book is a must read - very much the shape of things to come

3.0 out of 5 stars collage, 15 Oct 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is a collage of classified but also non classified documents - so the title puts you on the wrong foot. some are good source material though - but it remains essentially a collage. they are also sometimes very old - and some of the more worrying documents are not part of it. as with wikileaks one wonders how representative the 'leaks' are of what goes on.

WATER CRISIS IN PAKISTAN: A Book on Informatic Material
WATER CRISIS IN PAKISTAN: A Book on Informatic Material
by Khurshed Ahmed
Edition: Paperback
Price: 49.00

3.0 out of 5 stars good overview, 9 Oct 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
it is surprising that in spite of its importance there are very few books that give an overview of the water sector in pakistan. this book does to some extent - it is a little sketchy - informative but zooming in on some things and forgetting others. the minus point is the relatively large attention to issues that on a water richter scale in pakistan dont matter very much (arsenic) and leaving other more worrying challenges

5.0 out of 5 stars solid and courageous, 9 Oct 2011
having worked in pakistan every year since 1989 - in water management - and having lived there probably in the same period as anatol lieven's first stint i am amazed by this book. it is so solid on the facts and inspiringly courageous on the analysis - yes pakistan is a hard country and as professor lieven emphasizes it is all too easy to misjudge it and derate it. on top of it the writing style is admirable.

3.0 out of 5 stars important narratives, 31 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
the topic covered - intense rangeland management to increase productivity and create better land and water buffers- is very important and this has many interesting and unique narratives and experiences on holistic land management ala allan savory. the book is very much a personal journey nice - but sometimes one misses the bigger picture and systematic background

China's Water Warriors: Citizen Action and Policy Change
by Andrew C. Mertha
Edition: Paperback
Price: 17.50

4.0 out of 5 stars unique insights, 31 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
unique insights into water management in china, the forces propelling the move towards more and moe hydropower and irrigation - even in the face of hard physical consteaints - and also the openings for more pluralistic politics. also interesting analysis that with pluralism the ability to tackle issues and reverse degradation may actually slow down. good reading!
