3.0 out of 5 stars Innovative design but disapointing in use, 11 Oct. 2013
As a furniture maker / restorer I thought I would give this new design a spin and see how it shaped up. Initially I was quite impressed; the revolutionary one piece body was machined to a very high standard, as were the brassware and moveable front sole which opens and closes the mouth. Both the chip breaker (probably the best design I've seen on any plane) and blade are superbly machined from thick A2 steel; which holds a very good edge and both sit snugly on the frog assembly. Unfortunately this is where the plus points end, as it was all down hill from here; the wooden handles on my plane were poorly machined and the rear handle design in my opinion is crude and doesn't feel comfortable in use. My main bugbear though is the blade adjustment mechanism; firstly it incorporates lateral adjustment and as such it's all too easy to alter one state while adjusting the other, secondly the coarse thread means making very fine adjustments tricky. There is a brass locking nut below the adjuster which should lock everything in place after you've made your adjustments; but quite frankly I found this to be ineffective. After tweaking you can get good results; but for someone who works with hand planes on a daily basis, blade adjustment is too hit and miss for this to make the grade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic Power Metal at its best!, 3 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Thundersteel (Audio CD)
Wow, an absolutely brilliant comeback album for Riot, as the new lineup tear through nine crunching power metal classics with abandon. Vocalist Tony Moore has a terrific range and guitarists Mark Reale and Don Van Stavern are just magnificent, the rhythm section is led by powerhouse drummer Bobby Jarzombek, who later in his career was snapped up for Halford, which is an indication of his ability.

Every cut is a gem, but highlights for me are the blazing title track, which is a high octane rollercoaster full of thundering drumming and intricate guitar work. Just as good is Sign of the Crimson Storm, a rhythm driven delight, that displays the talents of Tony Moore as he rips through this vocally challenging number. Next up is the melodic gem Flight of the Warrior, a beautifully performed song, which trades light and heavy sections, that make for an astonishingly powerful track. Johnny's Back is a rhythmic plodder of the highest order, full of glorious vocals and explosive drumming. Bloodstreets kicks off with a oriental sounding intro but builds into a strong plodder brimming with emotionally sung lyrics. The album closes with an epic, Buried Alive, a masterfully written and performed doom laden gem, that is enhance by a fabulous tolling bell and eerie dialogue.

This album is a hidden classic and anyone who likes Melodic Power Metal should snap up a copy of this jewel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works but not worth the money, 17 May 2006
I purchased this screen shield as I found the glare of my TFT monitor to be much greater than my previous screen and suffered eye strain after long periods of usage. The Kensington Shield claims to reduce the glare by 95% and this it does very successfully.

BUT

Firstly and most importantly if you have a monitor which incorporates speakers either side THIS WILL NOT FIT!! I made mine fit by removing the lateral supports / brackets and balancing the central support on the top centre of my monitor, it works but it could get knocked off by careless hands.

Secondly this is expensive for what it is, a slightly grey piece of Perspex (which has a slight bow in it!) with a couple of brackets, this should retail for no more than £18.00 in my opinion.

Thirdly and finally, the actual plastic (Perspex?) is very glossy, I get a reflection of myself / background, although this is dependant where the light source is coming from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price, 25 Feb. 2006
I upgraded my RAM from 512MB to 1 GB, using the above Bytestor DIMM and have found a marked improvement in speed, particularly loading and closing Windows XP applications. For 35 quid the enhancement is well worth it, PCs automatically find additional memory so there’s no setup, it’s as simple as plug it in and it’s done. I can’t compare Bytestor with other manufactures of memory, but I’m happy with the results of upgrading with their product.
The only things to check when purchasing, is the speed in MHz should match the motherboard specification- see the manual supplied with your PC, and of course that you have a spare DIMM socket, or else you will have to replace all existing DIMMs with upgrades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, 28 Aug. 2005
This review is from: Fields of Yesterday (Audio CD)
Considering this is just a compilation of tracks which didn't make it on to 'Love + War' or 'Poetic Justice' its surprisingly good. As the previous chap mentioned there are a couple of weaker efforts especially that of the rowdy 'Become a Monster' and the production on the excellent 'Calm before the Storm' is ropy. This however is outweighed by hidden gems like the quality opening track, the pulsating 'Pulling out the Rats', along with the superbly sung ballad 'When it Rains' and the mean rocker 'Twilight in Hell'. This album just shows the strength of 'Lillian Axe' when you see the quality that didn't make it onto their original albums. For those new to the band I would recommend their second album 'Love + War' (no longer available), or if you can't get that, go straight for their exceptional live album.

The meter we received was totally inaccurate, consistently low and ultimately useless, perhaps our unit was faulty, but would not purchase another Braun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Lizzy Borden Spin-Off, 30 Nov. 2004
This review is from: IF IT AIN'T BROKE (Audio CD)
This is basically a Lizzy Borden spin-off, which features Lizzy on vocals and musicians who have recently worked with him. Overall an average blend of 70's, 80's carefree Hard Rock, ala Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith. There's a few modern moments which I think spoil a couple of tracks and all told not in the same league as 'Lizzy Borden' proper.

2.0 out of 5 stars Look great but thats it!, 18 Nov. 2004
Visually these phone are superb, very easy to use and of excellent build quality, regrettably the reception on the second handset of the pair I purchased was appalling, after the second complaint from a customer I boxed the lot up and sent it back.
