5.0 out of 5 stars Two splendid (and very funny) movies, 26 Dec. 2011

John Ford is exactly the director to turn to when you're feeling blue! This great double album (featuring among others the young Humphrey Bogart) is certain to lift your spirits : I was doubled up with laughter throughout a large part of the films ! A most enjoyable moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beauty of Spanish dance, 21 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was the first movie entirely devoted to dance by distinguished Spanish film director Carlos Saura. It was produced in 1992, and was followed by "Flamenco" in 1995, "Tango" (1998) and "Fados" (2007). Saura shows a total fascination with dance, which he had previously demonstrated in his superb 1983 production of "Carmen".

This is a film for unconditional dance devotees. It starts off with an amazing dance routine by a group of very aged persons, the senior member (a woman) delivering an astonishingly fluid, graceful and coquettish performance of traditional sevillanas, surrounded by folk you would normally find in a home for pensioners in Northern Europe, but who are full of beans in this delightful film.

What I find most interesting is Mr. Saura's passionate approach to the dance forms of Andalucia, at the southern tip of Spain, knowing that he was a native of Huesca, Aragon, the most northern part of the Peninsula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our little pebble seen from above, 8 Feb. 2011
A brilliant book, to be recommended to anyone interested by the impressive breakthroughs in photography of our planet from Outer Space.

The book is all the more interesting because it explains in laymens terms how these splendid pictures were taken.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare and priceless film, 13 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm very interested in the Spanish Civil War, but there are far more written accounts available than documentary films about this brutal confrontation. Hence my surprise to discover this gem of a movie, with commentaries by Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos, no less. Incredible frontline film footage of the battle for Madrid, with civilians fleeing for shelter under the bombs, the heroic defense by the Loyalists of the Madrid-Valencia road in order that food supplies could keep coming to the beleaguered capital.

I understand French director Jean Renoir tried to water down the French version of this film, because of France's ambiguous position re. the Republican Government. This caused great bitterness between him and Joris Ivens, the indefatigable Dutch communist director of "Spanish Earth".

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning Messiah, 13 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Handel: Messiah (Audio CD)
I have collected several versions of Haendel's Messiah over the years, and this one is by far the best. Brilliant choral and solo singing, fast-paced but never rushed, superb solos, a really exciting version of this great classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely Golly, 9 Dec. 2010

I hadn't seen gollies for years. Then I came across this one and bought it for my eight-year-old daughter for Christmas. And she was thrilled! It's a lovely item, beautifully made and just the right size to cuddle up in bed with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all-purpose shoes, 25 Aug. 2010
Fine shoes, which were very decently priced when I bought them. They are truly all-purpose and all-weather. They're comfortable to wear, and have excellent grip : I've climbed rocks with them and used them for mountain walks in the Pyrenees, and they held out perfectly. But they also look good and don't make you seem like a caveman when you're sitting at the terrace of a café in town !

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 strange films by a most unusual movie-maker, 21 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Guy Maddin has a cult following amongst movie-lovers in the part of the world where I live. Each of his works yields fresh surprises, aesthetically and dramatically, and he can safely be considered one of the most original film-makers around today. Most of the Maddin movies I have seen so far are filmed in an eerie early 20th-century black and white style, which hooks you from the very first pictures.

Finding three of his works (including one really short film : 6 minutes) on this single DVD is a boon, especially at such a reasonable price.

He is the sort of film director whose total opus one could collect fanatically.
