5.0 out of 5 stars Is this where popular music began?, 19 Sep 2012

This review is from: Essential Sun Records (Audio CD)
Most albums which claim to be "Essential" are actually far from being so, but this one really is an indispensable purchase for anyone interested in experiencing the roots of popular music for the first time. Given the age of the recordings, sound quality on the CD is very good, and at this price it is a real steal.

All of the big names that you'd expect are here, from Howlin' Wolf to Johnny Cash via Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. Of course, not every worthy recording by the artists can be included on 2 cds, but that is the beauty of collections such as this: they provide an easy, inexpensive way to find out which of the artists you like so that you can then explore their back catalogue, make further purchases and experience the delight of hearing more of their songs for the first time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great buy for casual / new fans, 19 Sep 2012

This review is from: New Orleans Hit Story (Audio CD)
Some of the best and most influential music of the 20th Century came out of New Orleans: artists like Little Richard and Fats Domino undoubtedly helped shape the face of popular music. But there is much more to the musical history of this city than the big stars: many lesser known artists also released an incredible number of worthwhile tracks.

And that is where the problems begin for the casual / new listener, or anyone wanting a sample of this very extensive and diverse output without spending a fortune: there are a bewildering number of compilations available so how do you begin to choose one?

Well, this is an excellent place to start. Considering the age of the tracks, sound quality is admirable and it contains a sensible mix of several tracks by a few major artists (so that you can get a good idea whether you like them enough to buy a whole album - or more - of their work) plus 1 or 2 tracks from a number of the lesser known artists.

Of course, some people will feel that important tracks are omitted; and they're right. But you need to be reasonable with your expectations; it is impossible to provide a comprehensive collection on just 2 cds from such a huge output.

Bad Boy: The 19th DCI Banks Mystery (Inspector Banks Mystery)
Bad Boy: The 19th DCI Banks Mystery (Inspector Banks Mystery)
by Peter Robinson
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid DCI Banks book (and far better than the TV show), 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've read, and enjoyed, all of the Banks novels. In DCI Banks, Robinson has created a memorable, well-rounded, likeable but flawed character and written several excellent stories. If you're a fan of the murder-mystery & police procedural genres, you can count on him for a good read. (My only minor gripe is that his occasional tendency to be overly descriptive means that his novels do not have the fast pace and non-stop action of some. But I wonder if that may be intentional, a mechanism for conveying the fact that the pace of life in a usually sleepy North Yorkshire town is more sedate than that of a major city).

In this book, Banks' daughter is at the centre of a major investigation, making it his most personal case to date. The personal angle (the worry, uncertainty, divided loyalties etc) is handled well and this is another very good book in an exceptional series... Don't let the distinctly average TV adaptations put you off!

The Gropes
The Gropes
by Tom Sharpe
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

2.0 out of 5 stars A substandard release from the master of farce, 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Gropes (Paperback)
Sadly, I can only concur with several of the other reviews of this book. As a huge fan of Sharpe's previous work and unrivalled ability to create hilarious characters and situations, this book was a tremendous disappointment. It displays none of his immense talent, and remains the only one of his books which I gave up on before reaching the end.

The Wilt Inheritance: (Wilt Series 5)
The Wilt Inheritance: (Wilt Series 5)
by Tom Sharpe
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.59

3.0 out of 5 stars The author may be a genius, but this is not his best work, 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read all of Tom Sharpe's books and thoroughly enjoyed the majority of them. In addition to the joys of his barbed - but very true - comments on a wide range of subjects, the vivid characterisation and crazy situations which he creates are at times laugh-out-loud funny. More than once, I've made the mistake of reading them in public and been unable to restrain myself, earning glares or quizzical glances from strangers. Sadly, age seems to be catching up with the author here, and this novel lacks the sparkle and originality of much of his previous work, despite the familiarity of the main character.

Dexter - Seasons 1-3 Complete [DVD]
Dexter - Seasons 1-3 Complete [DVD]
Dvd ~ Michael C. Hall

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series, 19 Sep 2012

When a film or tv show is made which is based on a book or series of books, I almost always prefer the book. So when a friend recommended this to me, I was reluctant to watch it, having tried to read the books by Jeff Lindsay and not liked them.

However, my reluctance was totally unjustified: it is outstanding. I don't propose to outline the premise for or format of the series here, since the product review and other reviewers do it better than I could, but I will say that it is extremely well produced, while the storylines and acting are first class. All of the characters are engaging, even Dexter the serial killer. In the books, I couldn't identify with this character at all, but onscreen portrayed by Michael C Hall, it is entirely a different matter.

Usually I find that I'm starting to get bored with a series after watching 5 seasons, but I have now watched upto season 6 of Dexter on dvd and am eagerly awaiting the release of season 7.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good way to pass the time, 19 Sep 2012

The puzzles in this reasonably priced book (and indeed book 2 in the series) are suitable for most abilities and are just different enough from regular suduko to be interesting, while the concept and methods required to solve them of course remain familiar. A better way of passing the time than watching tv!

Everything there is to say about this amazing, educational, thought provoking dvd has already been said by other reviewers.

It is an overview of the life work of Charles Darwin (one of the greatest & most important scientists not just of the 19th century but of any century) presented in the unique style of the incredible Sir David Attenborough, the world's premier naturalist & presenter.

Indispensable!

These deliciously chewy, flavour-packed sweets bring back childhood memories. Sadly they are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and as a consequence, the few suppliers who do sell them are able to charge a higher price than may be expected. Because they're not the greatest value for money, I'm loathe to give them the full 5 stars, even though they are lovely. Nevertheless, I would definitely buy them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem of an album, 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Don't Explain (Audio CD)
Like many others, I purchased this cd after hearing Your Heart is as Black as Night on the radio, and being blown away by it. If you liked this track (and how could you not?), you will not be disappointed by the album.

Hart's raw, emotional, bluesy vocals and Bonamassa's incredible talent on the guitar are a perfect combination. Add a selection of great soul songs with (mostly) deep, meaningful lyrics and the result is one of the best albums not just of the year, but of the 21st century to date.
