5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written, moving story of a man once enormously famous and now forgotten., 4 Feb. 2015
A beautifully written, moving story of a man once enormously famous and now forgotten. Mor ethan that, it is a fascinating psychological portrait of a man driven partly by his strange relationship with his mother, and partly by romantic dreams of glory. It is also from time to time very funny, as Dufferins's dreams run into reality - worst of all financial reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful life of a very great poet, 21 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An outstandingly well written and sympathetic life of one of our greatest poets, showing how his life and his faith and his poetry form one complex unity. Drury writes with the same subtle simplicity as does Herbert himself. A must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving story of two talented women fighting free of the shadows of famous fathers, 21 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant and moving - and sometimes funny - accout of two brilliant women, daughters of world famous fathers, struggling to make their own lives in an age when women had few rights , and when every childbirth could be fatal. Beautifully written and perceptive; a book which by bringing hidden voices from the past alive tells a story of universal significance. And sheds an important sideways light on two of our greatest poets.
