The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Official Strategy Guide
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Official Strategy Guide
by David Hodgson
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Skyrim, 14 Aug. 2012
This is a hefty tome for sure, 650+ pages. It's like the Bible of Skyrim.

All the aspects of the game are covered for the casual player and for the meticulous player alike. Every main quest, side quest, and ambient quest. Every collectible, ingredient, and weapon. Hints on how to do everything from complete a quest to alchemy, enchanting, and smithing.
Helpful skills tree guidance if you're unsure which perks to pick. A very comprehensive map with every location charted for you.

As a quick reference for the game it is not so good. Often if you are looking for particular peice of information like a list of the houses your can own and their features, it can be hard to find the information you want. Instead you are often lead around multiple pages, and still might not find out what you wanted.

The information bound between these pages is second to none. It has everything. Great for the meticulous player who demands details.
As a 'quick reference' it is not so great, often the internet will lead you much more quickly and accurately to the answer you seek.

Many reviewers have labelled this 'a flop', and trash the humour and direction.

One resorted to copy and pasting from wikipedia/imdb. I shall not.

Meet Dave is no Beverly Hills Cop, but that's a given seeing as it's a comedy family film.

In this respect I think it does well. It's gentle, funny, and uses all the components of a kids film; friendship, finding new friends, overcoming adversity etc. where's the harm in that?

Eddie gives a classically Eddie performance in that it's unassuming, funny, and consistent. The support cast is good too.

Meet Dave is a simple family comedy, dealing largely in slapstick and the more obvious schools of humour. It demands nothing from ths audience and has the humour for kids and is watchable for the adults.

So if you want to bang on about direction, acting, and what some stuffy reviewer thought of it maybe you should watch a film more deserving of such criticisms.

This is a kids film, and as such it's funny and light hearted, in respect to that it checks all the right boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, funny, enchanting., 22 July 2012
This review is from: Tangled [DVD] (DVD)
Not a huge fan of Disney on the whole, (more a Dreamworks fan) I was more than pleasantly surprised by this.

It's an instant charmer.

With the perfect blend of goodies and baddies, and great colourful characters that kids and adults will love. And of course the music that has made many Disney films what they are (Aladdin for instance).

Tangled weaves a fantastically funny and enjoyable story that the whole family can enjoy. It has charm and wit, is beautifully animated and voice acted, and brilliantly written and directed. The comedy is slapstick enough for younger viewers and a lot is subtle enough for us grown-ups to enjoy too. It really feels as if Disney has gone in a new and fresh direction with Tangled.

It has since become a staple in our house as one of those films you can watch over and over and it's still enjoyable.

This ones a keeper for sure.

The Emperor's New Groove [DVD] [2001]
The Emperor's New Groove [DVD] [2001]

4.0 out of 5 stars Unsung hero, 19 July 2012
I bought this on a whim, not really knowing anything about the film and going on a couple of good reviews.

I think it's an odd one. It's good in ways and bad in others. I think this is a 'classic' Disney cartoon in the purest form. So if you're expecting fast humour and pick up like Aladdin or epic story telling like The Lion Kong, you won't find it here.

What you will find is a nice story with the classic characters; the one on a journey, those trying to stop him, and side kicks. In this it delivered well.

It's slow to pick up as it builds the emperors character, and you have to set your mind back to when characters were much simpler and larger than life than they are often depicted today. Cartoons of this era a very 'pantomime' in theme, this is no exception.

As the film gathers it's pace about half way through it picks up nicely. The humour is there and rolls steadily along with the film, and you begin to like the characters, even the baddies. The character of the emperor starts off as an overly self centred arrogant ass which did grate on me a bit. But when teamed up with his unlikely friend 'Patcha' this offers some balance to the performance and gave the film the necessary pace to continue better than it started.

All in all The Emperors New Groove is a classic style Disney cartoon. The characters are big and colourful, the action is fun and carefree, and the story is simple and enjoyable. If this is all you ask for then this is a good film, if not a little slow to gather pace.

Trying to save money by ordering this instead of the branded Graco cover wasn't a shrewd idea it turns out.
Initially the cover is a bad fit for our Quattro Tour Deluxe travel system pushchair, which makes it impossible to put the hoods up or down with the rain cover on. Secondly the zip des not undo far enough to enable easy access to the entirety of the baby area including the hoods.
Thirdly the seams began to tear around the back of the pushchair where the fit is far too tight.

All in all it keeps the rain off, but it won't last long.

Even though some have written bad reviews of this item, I are no issues with it.

It works a treat for keeping my golf score as a high handicap golfer (hacker, would be more accurate). It tallies accurately and reliably and has survived being dropped in water and knocking around in my pockets and golf bag for some weeks now.

It's cheap and it works. What more could you want?

RFG offers what no other game of it's era offered; a completely destructible world. This is the games unique selling point.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game is a little shallow as the 'destroy everything' methodology is the premise behind nearly all the missions and activitys/side missions.

Essentially you wind up with very repetitive gameplay - go here - blow something up -have a shoot out with the EDF (the bad guys).

Which is a shame as RFG is not a bad game; the graphics are good, the play is smooth, and action is satisfying and the map is fairly varied offering a pretty comprehensive martian environment to explore. But other than blowing stuff up, there seems little else to do.

A good effort and it certainly keeps the Red Faction running smoothly from the first game. It just lacks substance. Enjoyable enough to play for half and hour here and there though.

I thought to myself one day "who the hell buys a golf game? What's the attraction?"
Then I bought one....and the attraction?
Fun for all the family, old or young, good, bad, or indifferent. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 is highly accessible and a great deal of fun. That's what a game is all about right?

PGA doesn't just offer the golf tour, there is much more to offer from creating your character and customising him/her with different clothing items and equipment. To playing a myriad of different golf games from stroke play, golf mini games, to battle golf. Earning money and stats on the way. The game learning curve is smooth and easy to pick up, offering a good challenge for anyone. While never becoming too difficult.

What's more is you don't even have to know anything about golf, as my partner displayed trailing by just one stroke over 18 holes the first time she played. Just pick up and play.

It's got all the attractions for the golf fan too; the courses, pros, apparel, and all your favourite brands. There's plenty to attract everyone else as well like the playabilty, and easy going feel of the game. Play with just you or up to three more mates on the same console (only one controller needed too).

If you are interested in golf; buy this game. If you're not sure; buy this game. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sandler makes Golf funny., 6 Jun. 2012
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Adam Sandler is a good comedy presence in all his films and I find his mix of nice-guy angry-guy to be most hilarious and well portrayed.

As usual he pulls it off in this golfing comedy, about a drop-out hockey player who finds his true calling is on the fairway not the ice.

The film is by no means an Oscar nominee, but it is good gentle comedy for the whole family. It has all the ingredients; mislead protagonist who finds a good reason to change course and succeed against a villain.

Adam's character "Happy Gilmore" is the typical Sandler part as said before. If you want something new this isn't it, but it is still as good as Mr. Deeds, and Anger Management, etc. In all honesty Sandler pretty much plays the same character in all of his films, but that's no big deal as he still delivers the laughs.

Happy Gilmore will cure a dull spell when you just want something easy and funny to watch. It's not amazing, but it's not terrible. And for the price you can't go wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mental fun, 6 Jun. 2012

This review is from: Timesplitters (PS2) (Video Game)
It's been a while.
This game is old now, you can count the pixels on the guns. And you know what?
I don't care.

Timesplitters is a great game to play with mates offline. Get yourself some snacks, drinks, and dive into run and gun action.

Even though it shows it's age the play is still smooth and responsive, the action is fast and wild, and the weapons availible are wide and varied.
Play with two of you up to four, run and gun on loads of brilliant maps and gametypes like capture the bag, bag tag, deathmatch, and point defence. Have up to 10 bots of various difficulties if you gwt bored of shooting each other...hours of fun, just pick up a controller and go for it.

This is what offline multiplayer should be today, but so few games feature it.

The game also includes a story mode which is a little repetitive and is either too easy or impossible. Which can grate a bit, but you can play that with two of you as well to halve the frustration.

Also features a map-editor to create your own multiplayer maps, which can take a while but it well worth it.

If you still have a PS2, you are missing out if you are missing a copy of Timesplitters.
