3.0 out of 5 stars Great performance, 17 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A performance worthy of the group's reputation, but the sound quality on the DVD is so bad (unless I have a faulty disc)that the product should contain a warning about the poor sound. I would have bought it anyway, for reasons of nostalgia, but the terrible sound quality was especially disappointing since I watched it immediately after the DVD of the 2005 Cream reunion, where the sound quality was as good as it gets for a live recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the scholar rather than the Saxon pagan, 13 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rudiments of Runelore (Paperback)
The book is quite short and to the point, being based on a talk on the subject of runes. It will appeal mainly to the Anglo-Saxon scholar rather than Saxon pagans or people interested in magical aspects of runes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Folklore Gem., 15 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a folklore gem. It gives an honest account of the lives of ordinary agricultural folk, with enough discrimination to concentrate on what is different and interesting.

The book is refreshingly free from the James Herriot rose-tint and is somewhat scholarly in tone. The author has the humility to realise that he is recording something which is going to disappear, and does not inflict any churchifying changes on his account on what are obviously
Odinic survivals (e.g after a wedding, the young men of a village take part in the 'bride lope', a race from the church to the bride's home. Modern Swedish for wedding is 'brollop').

This was an age when one part of the country could differ greatly from another, and dialect could make local speech almost unintelligible to an outsider. The recording of this parish and its surroundings is a service both to literature, and to folklore and linguistic historians. It is the sort of book you can read once a year and never tire of.

Freeplay Sherpa LED Wind Up Torch - Green
Freeplay Sherpa LED Wind Up Torch - Green

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but needs a handle., 21 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This product works excellently, providing light through USB charging, or, in case of need, winding up. However it has one weakness. I am male with slightly larger than average hands, yet I have to take care when holding the torch because of its size.. For most women, or men with small hands, this could be a serious problem. The answer would be a handle on one side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and entertaining., 16 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film was made as morale boosting propaganda during WWII, along with films like 'Went the Day Well?', 'The Day will Come' etcetera. If pushed I would say that this was my favourite of the bunch. We are presented with a set of characters alienated from the struggle against Germany by circumstances - loss of a son, a sea captain wrongly blamed for abandoning his ship, a citizen of the Irish republic. Their gradual reengagement in the war effort is nicley tied in with a mild ghost story, introduced so gradually and gently that it does more in the line of adding atmosphere than powering the plot, but none the worse for that.

It is basically the redemption theme found in 'A Christmas Carol', 'The Singing Detective' etcetera, but applied to the wartime situation. Highly recommended - the sort of film you can watch repeatedly because atmosphere is as important as plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Stuff, 13 Feb. 2011

Good solid stuff, showing how to see through the specious arguments and badly interpreted data so common today. Unfortunately it is least likely to be read by those who need it most.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable navigation backed by opaque website & unreliable support., 12 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this product about a month ago. Having got used to its particular terminology, I find that outright mistakes are not uncommon. Last night I would have ended up going in exactly the wrong direction if I had not basically known the route. When I find mistakes in my own area, I cannot use the device in unknown territory. The product is a disgrace. In order to get the voice commands to work reliably I had to imitate an American accent. The website is opaque and difficult. Info from Support is plain wrong. Telephone support is not available weekends or weekdays after 6:30. My purchase of the Live services bundle is still not loaded, the first go having been foiled by a server error. My advice is to buy a GPS speed trap detector and a road Atlas. I will never buy another TomTom product, and recommend potential purchasers not to make the same mistake as me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs perseverance, but is worth it., 3 May 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Smart People [DVD] (DVD)
A variation on the redemption theme which started with Ebenezer Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol' and was successfully continued in 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'The Singing Detective' (UK TV version with Michael Gambon), Scrooged etc, and was humorously inverted in 'Blackadder's Christmas Carol'.
This take on the theme varies in that the resolution is not a complete transformation of the 3 inadequate characters (the adoptive brother is only superficially inadequate, and is actually the only major character living a sane life), but a sense that the father (Quaid), girlfriend (Parker) and daughter (Page) may be starting to turn in the right direction. Acting honours go to Page for creating a character that you simultaneously want to slap and hug, and would bring out the paternal/maternal in anyone over 20.
The soundtrack is something to be endured, not enjoyed, conjuring up the atmosphere of a rainy day in Alaska, but all in all the film is well worth watching.
