I enjoyed Tightrope but felt that the character creation in "Girl who fell.." could have been used more successfully in a second and even third WW11 novel. I have a sense of missed opportunity here for the author whose books are not as widely read as they should be. There are four excellent ( and interesting ) characters in Girl which could be extended in further experiences. The pace of the book is excellent and the feel for the time is also well written.
I sort of feel the same about Tightrope. There are 2 or 3 good novels in this canopy and Mawer is better than other authors quoted as comparable ( Boyd; Le Carre) at maintaing the pace of the adventure and chase. I find the coincidences a little stretched ( as in The Glass Room ) but heh this is a novel and some allowances can be made. Highly recommended .
