Creole Belle (Dave Robicheaux Book 19)
Creole Belle (Dave Robicheaux Book 19)
Price: £3.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Its all about the plot man..., 2 Oct. 2013
I love JLB's writing - mystical, poetic, but if you are writing what is essentially a mystery there has to be some measured structure to the plot. Seemingly JLB is inserting pocket sized bites of plot narrative to advance what little story there is, into his admittedly wonderful but chapters long descriptive passages that can seem eternal at times. As for the conversations, the level of sophistry even whilst talking about breakfast between family members quite frankly just seems like a chance for JLB to show off his own vocabulary, and becomes totally unbelieveable and wearing.

Most authors will say that you should review and review a book to ensure every single word is needed. This process would have made this book very short indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but spoiled by lack of reserach and professional review, 13 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Am about half way through this and am enjoying it but would be so much better without mistakes and with some proper research that lets the book down somewhat. As examples, a main character who is said to be worrying about 9 terrorists a page before he is told how many there are, references to the UK using SCUD missiles in the gulf war, football matches being played in the evening of New Years Eve in central London and so on. The authors lack of writing craft/experience shows in some quite cringeworthy parts such as stating "he was handsome for a terrorist" which made me wince.

On the whole though worth a read and a very promising debut by a young author I suspect may turn out really rather good!

This was a great product but after three months it wont play any ipod of any sort. Not the sort of standard you expect from Sony and looking at some of the bad reviews for this product it appears to be a common issue,

Having got this for free when it was on offer I did not expect much, but this turned out to be an excellent book. Well written, with interesting and developing characters, a neat and tidy (if in my opinion pretty unlikely) plot. Any fan of detective/ mystery writers will enjoy this - I would highly recommend it and am looking forward to starting the next few in the series. Well worth paying for.

Its pretty cheap and tacky looking but thats because its cheap - you get what you pay for folks. It works fine as a cheap holiday watch. One point I would make is that it is much smaller than it looks and seems more like like a ladies watch in size. The light is also pretty poor.

3.0 out of 5 stars More romance than thriller, 31 Oct. 2012

Apologies to all if this review seems a rather sexist review but I suspect this book would probably be preferred by woman for the romance angle rather than men for the mystery part. I actually enjoyed most of the book, the writing is fairly decent, but the ending is incredibly rushed and left me feeling rather cheated. The actual mystery part is rather ludicrous and relies on an astounding number of coincidences. I think thwe 'plot' development is summed up when the detective spends the last ten pages of the book explaining who did what to who and how (including the coincidences!). In addition, the subsequent actions/thoughts of the heroine after one particular incident (which I won't spoil by explaining but you will know it when you read it) are quite laughable. So, in summary, very readable but a rewrite of the ending would make it much better!

I didn't expect much but this turned out to be an excellent read that I would highly recommend - Sam Spade in zombieland. I really hope this is not a stand alone book as it could make a great series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very tedious - first book I havent finished in years!, 13 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Reamde (Paperback)
Dull, improbable characters you won't care about, tedious descriptive passages that add nothing, a hundred words to show the authors vocabulary off when one would do. I have given up at page 200, the first time I haven't finished a book in years. I suggest you dont waste any time and read something else. The worst book I have ever tried to read, and I can only assume the good review in the paper was from one of his friends in the trade. Avoid, or buy it for someone you don't like!

4 sports stories in the Sunday edition? Pathetic, and not much worth reading anywhere else. Barely worth getting for free.
