5.0 out of 5 stars excellent finish. A delight in the hand, 7 Aug. 2014

Lovely little knife. Razorsharp, excellent finish. A delight in the hand. Deserves to be used with care by somebody who knows how to use it and how not to abuse it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love them, 24 Jun. 2014

Some reviewers have found them a bit too recherché, but I love them. Am listening to them in the car from and to work every day and each CD I put in is a delight to listen to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing, 8 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: India - Cookbook (Hardcover)
A hefty tome. Unfortunately it is printed on paper of poor quality by western standards.
The nomenclature makes no concessions to people who do not speak hindi or urdu.
This makes it hard for westerners like me to check whether any recipe can be prepared in my kitchen, because you have to look up all the ingredients and decide if they can be bought here at all, or are known under western names as well.
Calling ingredients by their western names, like green, red or black lentils instead of different types of dal would have helped. The pictures are pretty but they are not related to the recipes on the page overleaf; rather, you have to go to another part of the book to look them up. No general section on indian cooking techniques or utensils; most recipes are more or less a list of ingredients with little explanation in the way of how to use them.
All in all, not an easy book to use at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good protection, at a small cost, 14 Oct. 2013

Good protection, yet it only makes the tablet slightly more voluminous. Snug fit. I would immediately buy this again. Price reasonable.

3.0 out of 5 stars The cover says all, 28 Dec. 2010

It's trash, make no bones about it. But highly entertaining trash that does not require much effort from the reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heinlein revisited, 28 Dec. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The author owes a lot to Robert A. Heinlein, himself an author who inspired adoration as well as detestation in a sizeable fraction of his readers, and freely admits it. It reads like a modern space opera a la 'starship troopers' (the book, not the film) and that's why I enjoyed it. I do not agree with everything Heinlein wrote or with his ideas about society, but I do regard him as an important philosopher on the subject. The same arguments used against H could be used against Scalzi. But I say, keep writing. I may well read another of your books.

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely tool, 28 Dec. 2010
A solid, surprisingly heavy, well-made knife. Can easily be opened and closed one-handedly (left or right) and locks solid when open. Surfaces have a silky sheen and feel. Hinge opens and closes very smoothly. If a little play should develop with use you can adjust all screws with a torx screwdriver.

The main disadvantage is that it is a bit heavy to wear in your trouser pocket permanently as it will probably wear a hole in your pocket with time and not everybody will want to wear the nice black nylon holder on their belt.

The blade is just under 10 cm and may not be strictly legal in all jurisdictions, e.g. here in the Netherlands 9 cm is the upper limit, but I don't expect to be arrested in a fight situation or under other circumstances where this might be held against me :-).

I love it as a tool and love having it in my pocket. I wear it attached to a 35 cm lanyard cord against loss, which is long enough to do most jobs I need it for without having to detach it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as eats, shoots etc., 12 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It was OK but unlike her bestseller "Eats, shoots and leaves" it could not hold my attention long enough to allow me to finish it. Too much pointless ranting. Perhaps I meet too many normal, nice people to get worked up over the berks.

4.0 out of 5 stars quick food, 7 Sept. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Simple Chinese Cookery (Paperback)
Am I the only one to lament the rise of cookery books that are designed first to please the eye? Certainly, a picture can say more than a thousand words but I'll take the thousand words in a cookbook any day, that is, IF the cook really has something to say about the ingredients, what to look for, how to proceed. That said I think the title does say it all. It contains recipes that are simple and palatable, some are even delicious.
