2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Neil, tell me why, 6 Jun 2014
This review is from: A Letter Home (Audio CD)
Like others, I knew the premise going in, but this is pretty awful. We've been used to getting the odd bum track or even the not quite so good album over the last few years, but don't forget we shelled out for this indulgence. For someone who is championing sound and the so called excellence of the PONO, the sound on this is (deliberately I know) awful. The songs are classics, and the spoken letter to the past makes its point I guess. But it sounds worse than a really bad bootleg. Imagine Neil sitting in his kitchen playing acoustic guitar and warbling through some quite good songs. This would be ok if you were there. Intimate, raw, live. Now imagine that you are on the other side of the closed kitchen door and recording this on your phone. And then you fork out a tenner for the recording. One star for being Neil Young, another for the good songs. But you could have made this so much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars great album, but not "audiophile", 7 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wish I'd read some of the amazon.com reviews. The music is as spectacular as ever, cover art is great, but recording quality is not good. Pops and clicks abound, in fact sounds more like a well preserved original copy that has been played many times! Seems like it's not just my copy, and as others have said, it's mainly track 1 and 2. So I'll hang on to it, pretend it's an original, and treasure the artwork and the magnificent Moody's. 5 star album, shame about the pressing.

4.0 out of 5 stars she and him get festive, 31 Oct 2011

No surprises here as Zooey and M. serve it up nice and cheesey, with a bit of ham too - and that's great by me - will annoy many, and that's why I'll be playing it all over Christmas. (After this first listen I promise not to put it on again until December...)

M. even gets to sing a bit - and got to love the juxtaposition on "Baby it's Cold Outside."

Only four stars cos it's only 32 mins long.

Now where's my Christmas jumper and the advocaat?

5.0 out of 5 stars state of the nation, 10 Sep 2011
This is another excellent offering from Ry Cooder. He really mixes up the styles as he gives his take on current day US. "No Banker Left Behind" is a little too obvious, but the album really grows from there. "John Lee Hooker for President is a funny and clever track with references to JLH not only in the words but in the music too. "Christmas Time This Year' - Ho Ho Ho... Love it

5.0 out of 5 stars small, chic and retro, 1 Feb 2011

like previous reviewers, I like this bag a lot. It's stylish, retro looking, and just the job to carry your PEN around. It cannot be described as large however. I reckon a 2nd lens and a flash is all you'll be able to cram in along with the camera and 14-42 lens. Theres a couple of pockets for spare battery and SD cards. It measures around 10 ins wide x 7ins tall and 5 ins deep. So it's large only in comparison to their small and medium versions. But I do like it and would recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars reads like he speaks..., 1 Mar 2010

I found this lost it's way somewhat in the middlle which, much like the Soviet adventure went on a bit for no great reason - for us readers as well as for him. But as ever with the Good Doctor you get no nonense opinions and good anecdotes. Therefore I am an avid listener to his Friday bickering with Simon. However, I really could have done without all the italicising every other sentence, designed presumably to tell us which words to stress. It was like being shouted at by the book. I imagine this must be a bit like being in the room with him - OK for short periods but then starting to really irritate...

All in all not a bad read, but would have enjoyed it more without all the SHOUTING! :*)

4.0 out of 5 stars Keb keeps it up to date, 12 July 2004
This review is from: Keep It Simple (Audio CD)
One of the best of the modern bluesmen brings the genre right up to date with this great collection of songs. No more bemoaning the wife that left or the dog that died. Instead the title track pleads for less choice when he's trying to order a coffee; the excellent "France" tells of getting cheap tickets on the internet to take his baby away on holiday; and in the standout "Prosperity Blues" he is blue about not having the blues! When you add in the romantic tracks "One Friend", and "Closer", plus the tribute to Riley "BB" King, the album is perfect for late night listening with the special person in your life.
