5.0 out of 5 stars Buy and watch live - stunning, 8 Nov. 2014
This review is from: High Hazels (Audio CD)
One of the best debut albums, if not the best, you could buy and sheer class in every respect. Each song fits together beautifully and shows star talent and quality. Buy it, and if you get the chance, watch the High Hazels live; this is a band who ooze infectious melodies, subtlety, variety and sophistication. Work of this class suggests they are likely to eclipse the Arctic Monkeys and even Richard Hawley and would grace a higher stage. Brilliant in every respect and worth 10 stars.

Hearts Are Breaking

5.0 out of 5 stars A sheer gem of a track from a gem of a band, 1 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Hearts Are Breaking (MP3 Download)
This is just a gorgeous track, buy it! And what a video too, which can be enjoyed via youtube.

James, the lead singer has a mesmerising voice and writes beautiful lyrics. Add to this catchy shimmering guitars and above all, a band who play brilliantly together, then you have a recipe for totally excellent tracks like this and future success.

Comparisons with The Crookes and Richard Hawley at his best abound, but the High Hazels have their own unique talents, identity and class. Other tracks like French Rue and Summer Rain confirm this. No wonder then that they are being tipped for a bigger stage.

Amazing live and an album on its way...I can't wait; these lads already outclass many bands who made it ( e.g. The La's, Keane, and supermarket indie bands in general). They are too good not to deserve a wider audience.

I couldn't recommend more. Keep up the great poetic work fellas x

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and worth 5 stars, 1 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Chasing After Ghosts (Audio CD)
Loved it all, as I did Dreams of Another Day. If you have never heard this band play live, then do so...they are amazing! Obvious comparisons to Smiths, Housemartins, Echo, Aztec Camera and others may abound...but the best pigeon hole for this music is catchy, infectious and beautiful melodies that will have you singing along. I'd strongly recommend this and both other cd's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading - an amazing historical work, 17 July 2012

Wow...this book will truly open your eyes and probably (as with me) move you. It's not what you think you know, it's what you don't...too often, we just see the world from a one way lens of values and judgement. This book makes that so clear.

Stannard's work teaches us so much about History - great insights into precolonial societies and some truly mind blowing evidence...Stannard gives the reader a true historical sense of perspective and sense of how much we are often disinformed on issues like this. The evidence in the book is truly amazing if at times grim; if you want a book to take you out of your world view comfort zone of knowledge, this one does it. Scholarly referenced and incredibly interesting...this work should be read, respected and required reading all over the world.

Excellent!

The Crookes have produced a truly beautiful set of songs yet again. The songs fit really well together and show a definite new added confidence in their own sound. If you liked any of the early stuff (Smiths, Housemartins, Echo and the Bunnymen, 60's throwback...even odd slight Libertines hints at times), you'll love this.

Music of this charm and quality should perhaps not be pigeon-holed other than as great catchy infectious melodies that just stick in your head. The Crookes are amazing.

I enjoyed all of the first half of the album (American Girls is a great track and obvious single track option as well as Afterglow), yet the 2nd half of the album has even more quality and real craft. There are many delightful songs on this album, with standout tracks Hold Fast, Sal Paradise and Sofie and Where did our love go? Only minor gripe is that the MP4 version has another track on that isn't on the CD..the B side of Afterglow 'Honey' is also available only as MP download..still, this cannot detract from a 5 star rating. The music is simply stunning and if you've never seen 'em live, you're missing a treat.I'd recommend this album (and all their early stuff too) unreservedly as I can't stop playing it since buying it.

Top work fellas. Yes, yes, you are magicians...I can't wait to see you perform live again on Saturday.
