5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Soul!, 22 Feb. 2010

This review is from: The Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
Sweet Soul Music & Funky Street by Arthur Conley were two mainstays in the Soul scene during my teenage years. They have both stood the test of time because as I DJ at various Parties I am often asked for these songs even by younger people who have discovered this genre. It does encourage me that this style may once again take over from Rap. Both these two & a lot of other great songs are included here and it is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Still Has The Quality!, 22 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ever Since (Audio CD)
Circa 1963 & Lesley Gore dominated the American music scene with classics like It`s My Party & You Don`t Own Me which was later covered by The Blow Monkeys in the 1980`s for Dirty Dancing. [ Incidentally listen to Dusty Springfield`s version on her first album] By around 1967 the Tin Pan Alley material was history as music took a new direction. "Ever Since" see`s Lesley taking up the mantle of Singer-songwriter style which reminds the reader of Carole King or Laura Nyro. It is a very interesting album and she still has absolute quality. If you are looking for early type songs from Lesley this is not the album instead it is contemporary at its best. A great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars TEMPTIN` R&B, 8 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The UK missed out on the early motown first time around. Until, Dusty Springfield presented Motown on a TV special we had no way of knowing about this enduring sound which is now almost into 51 years old. I guess as we grew up with this amazing sound we could not imagine that generations after would be enjoying the sound from hitsville. At the heart of the early period was the Temptations with the so called golden five at the helm. Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks,Melvin Franklin, David Ruffin & Otis Williams had five years of magical hits which still sound amazing. You can buy any of The Temptations Cd`s from that period and cannot really go wrong with them. This is a case in point and standout track for me is Since I Lost My Baby, some wonderful five part harmonies make this track timeless. The thing is if you require a kind of best of then Gold is a great collection that has a wide range of The Temps work. However if you are like me and you like everything they made from that period then collect them all, such as Meet the Temptations, The Temptations sing Smokey and with a lot o` soul as well as this little gem. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars LULU CONTINUES TO AMAZE!, 4 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
You can purchase any album by Lulu and you know it will be quality. This one has a good selection down all her career beginning with the Isley Brothers classic Shout. There are some of her sixties hits which have been left off here but I would just buy this anyway because every track is outstanding. I really like Where the poor boys dance and also included her number one with Take That. Great album. A must buy if you like Lulu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gossip From Hitsville!, 4 Nov. 2009

I felt lucky during 2009 to have finally made it To Detroit and a visit to West Grand Boulevard home of Hitsville and a wonderful tour at the original studios. The guide does a wonderful job and he really interacts with the crowd. You get the feel for the atmosphere so much you almost sense the presence Of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations & The Four Tops or Marvin Gaye. I definitely recommend a visit to West Grand Boulevard to notice that nothing has changed in the 50 years since Berry Gordy bought Hitsville.[ Except the artists have now gone] The next best thing to Going to see the Museum is reading this book by Nelson George. There are other books but this one was written around 1985 and was very balanced and fair. Also, George clearly had done his homework in researching all the facts. My only criticisms with all the books I have read on motown is the lack of information on The Isley Brothers. I was a long time fan of them and it was odd how after they left Motown it was as if they had never ever recorded there. I saw them live in 1994 and they didn`t perform one Motown song. And so, to re-cap, great book , great museum in Detroit and brilliant Motown music. You could read the book on the Aeroplane to Detroit.

The problem with CD singles is that you tend to have several versions of the same song. This is the case in point and why I have marked it down to 3 stars. I bought this for a wedding which I was DJ and it is a really nice song for those occasions.
I can only state the purchase was OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Year!, 8 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Top Of The Pops 1976 (Audio CD)
1976 Was a great year musically perhaps reflecting a long hot summer most of us didn`t want to end. Disco was king and some memorable songs came out in the summer in that genre from Candi Staton, Real Thing, Tavares & Abba and some sweet soul in the form of The Isley Brothers with Harvest for the world & Dorothy Moore`s Misty Blue. Also rocking along were Thin Lizzy and Wild Cherry , 10cc kept their consistency chartwise and some near misses from Starbuck, & Elvin Bishop. One blackspot was the novelty hit Combine Harvester which prevented Paul McCartney topping the charts with silly love songs! This song by The Wurzels is the final track on 1976. Oh, the turbalence of the uk charts.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Up Year!, 8 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Top Of The Pops: 1977 (Audio CD)
Top Of The Pops like the TV programme itself is a wonderful series spanning totp years from start to finish. For those of us of a certain age it was a mish mash of a year musically, for others it would be monumental. Punk rock was happening all over the place, Disco still prevailed and one or two other bits and pieces saw it jog along but nothing more. The Punk period left very few lasting artists with probably only The Stanglers,The Clash and later the fabulous Jam having any longevity. This is about opinions , but 1977 is one of the least important years musically. However, this series is well worth collecting for posterity.

5.0 out of 5 stars MIDDLE OF A TURBALENT DECADE!, 1 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Top Of The Pops 1975 (Audio CD)
The Seventies, that most turbalent of decades which brought us flairs, platform shoes, kipper ties, maxi & midi skirts and musically rock, singer songwriter, punk, glamrock and disco. This collection right in the middle of the decade shows much of that and the TOTP series as a whole gives you such a diverse selection that there is something for everyone. While the seventies for me did not match the quality as much as the sixties there was some outstanding music just the same. 1975 evokes some special memories for me personally and a good selection here includes four number ones and the debut single for Bradford band Smokie. Also included is Lovin` You by Minnie Ripperton taken from the Perfect Angel album. Minnie later died from Lieukemia which was very sad. If you like the Seventies go for this or any of the other TOTP years because they are very good value.
