4.0 out of 5 stars Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You My Lad, 21 Aug. 2012
The 1968 Jonathan Miller and Michael Horden adaptation of MR James' most celebrated story is one of the greatest supernatural films ever made. Everything about it is perfect, from Horden's portrayal of a man tragically incapable of seeing beyond the realms of reason, to the awful tension of the pursuing figure on the beach, to the final gut-wrenchingly terrifying manifestation of the spirit. A faultless, understated masterpiece of pace, atmosphere and dread that refuses to fade after you turn the lights back on.
This would have got 5 stars were it not for the 2010 adaptation that accompanies the original. More of a nod to the 1968 version, than a remake, it should not have failed with John Hurt's excellent performance. And yet somehow it does. Whilst it has moments of genuine fear it is ultimately disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Awakening, 5 Aug. 2012
This review is from: The Awakening (2011) [DVD] (DVD)
This films bristles with tension and atmosphere. It is a chilling tale told with a great understanding and reverence for the traditional ghost story. The moment in which the excellent Rebecca Hall watches the film's previous scenes played out in miniature inside the doll's house is one of the most brilliantly realized supernatural set-pieces I have seen. A classic, in every sense of the word.

Caught by the River: A Collection of Words on Water
Caught by the River: A Collection of Words on Water
by Jeff Barrett
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Caught By The River, 6 Jun. 2012
A genuinely wonderful anthology featuring a varied and expertly curated collection of contributors including Irvine Welsh, Bill Drummond, Bob Stanley, Jarvis Cocker and of course the complete angler's bard, the magical Chris Yates. If your safe place is by the river bank, this book will transport you there with ease.

4.0 out of 5 stars The English Ghost, 27 Mar. 2012
A fine collection of "real life" supernatural encounters. The book is interesting as a companion piece to a fictional collection of ghost stories as it sets the cultural background to the english ghost story and the nation's interest in the subject. Do not expect the suspense or dread of MR James but enjoy instead a look at the roots of the genre within folk tales and eyewitness accounts. That's not to say that aren't moments that will chill.

The Trial (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Trial (Penguin Modern Classics)
by Franz Kafka
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of paranoia and creeping fear, 19 Mar. 2012
A masterpiece of paranoia and creeping fear. Kafka's ability to find terror in the banal and humour in the grotesque can be traced through the best psychological horror ever since, particularly with the work of David Lynch. Like Orwell's 1984, it is all too easy to see Kafka's reality creeping into our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest post-apocalypse story of all time., 14 Mar. 2012
Perhaps the greatest post-apocalypse story of all time. The contrasting moments of lonely isolation and desperate panic are terrifying to read. The debt that zombie stories owe to this book cannot be understated; from the opening of 28 Days Later to the moral collapse of The Walking Dead, the legacy of Wyndham's classic will live on for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A creepy little gem of a short story., 14 Mar. 2012
This was read aloud around the fire on a recent camping trip. Set during a game of hide and seek in an old country house on Christmas Eve, The Carousel builds the suspense and sense of dread wonderfully before delivering its devastating climax. A creepy little gem of a short story that sticks in the imagination for some time afterwards.

Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood
Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood
by Algernon Blackwood
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, 13 Mar. 2012
Blackwood is one of the greatest writers of all times, in any genre. The breadth of his imagination, his subtly plotted mounting dread and the sheer otherworldly fear that he manages to evoke in the most natural of scenes is breathtaking and genuinely terrifying. The Willows and The Wendigo are like lessons in storytelling and two of the most frightening tales put to paper. Faultless.

A fine collection. It's testament to King's craft as a storyteller that this is one of the finest books he has produced and yet sits somehwat outside his usual genre. Three of the four stories have been made into movies (Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption being the most well known). Reading them here adds a new dimension to the films especially to the slightly more ambiguous presentation of Andy in The Shawshank Redemption. Elswhere Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method expertly deliver a more typical King tale. Hugely enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection, 11 Mar. 2012
This is an excellent collection. There are some essential classics from MR James, Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen; as well as some lesser known but equally chilling tales from Philip Pullman, Peter Ackroyd and JB Priestley. Whilst I agree in part with other reviewers that the prefaces to some of the stories take a little of the unexpected away, there is some interesting information in there and worth reading after the story itself. I particularly liked the arrangement of the stories into genres such as Christmas Spirits, Tales of Unease etc. Good stuff.
